First off
If you are going to take the time to give me a crappy score, at least take the time to comment on my picture and tell me why you are giving me such a low score.
And second
Vote and comment on all pictures in the challenge, its not like you have to write a freaking book, just spend a few seconds to say what you like/don't like about the picture.

| I understand your frustration about a poor score and not quite sure why b/c you are not getting any comments but blasting people for not commenting on all the photos they vote on when you don't comment on all the photos you vote on seems a bit hypocritical. If you get a poor score and you are genuinely interested in why then you can post it up in a thread when the voting is over, you will get some in depth critique which I find much more useful then most the comments made during voting. The reason is people will spend more time when they know you are interested in their opinion b/c you asked for it, plus there is an open dialog and you can express to people what you were trying to achieve and they can suggest how you might have been able to better achieve that goal. Good luck and post up after the voting is done, people will help. |

I am not blasting people...the first couple of challenges I entered I voted/commented on every photo, but after seeing that people were not going to return the favor, I stopped doing it, which I know is somewhat hypocritical. This post is not complaining or blasting people or being mad at the people of this site, it is simply a petition for people to start being nice and commenting. |

Common complaint. Hear this all the time. There have been enought threads dedicated to this to cut down the Virtual Amazon forrest.
As suggested, at the end of the challenge, create a new thread, and kindly ask for comments. many of us will comment on the photo in that case, and give you advice.
Commenting takes time, especailly if you are going to give good comments (ie more than a couple of words). In a challenge of 237 images, the number of comments everyone will receive will be lower. It takes me a minimum of a minute per photograph to comment, by the time you look closly to give constructive comments, and ideas of what could have worked. many images take longer. In the Backlighting Challenge, that means Hours (at least four. Closer to six). So commenting on all photos is not going to happen. I doubt I will vote at this stage either. (Trust me, try commenting on all of them......) Unless you want comments of Nice Shot, Lights Bad, Wrong Angle, Bad Crop, Good Photo, overexposed, bad PP etc etc. I don't find there two word comments that helpful (hence I don't give them).
I always encourage being who are complaining about a lack of comments to go out and comment a group of photos in the challenge. That way, hopefully, if enough people do that, everyone complaining might get a constructive comment out of it............

Nice is something you will get on other sites. On this site...people speak their mind. Whether it is influenced by their day at work...or their own low scoring image...or even their own high scoring image...or that bunch of flowers they just received. But whatever the case...people don't put icing on their comments. This isn't a back-patting site.
Yes I agree..people can be nicer. But if you want to grow in your hobby...then you need to be told where to improve. Now that leads to actually receiving comments. There has been so much bitching about troll voters and insulting commenters and even bitching about nice commenters that some people are just too damn scared to comment now.
I applaud you for starting your time with the site by commenting....but why pull back when you don't receive the comments. If you keep giving comments...people will start to sit up and take notice. Now if over time a few more started commenting, and then a few more...before long....there will be lots of members commenting. You have to start somewhere...so why don't you be the one to start.
I comment when I can....heck I even encourage 100% commenting in another thread. Unfortunately due to my hectic schedule it isn't always possible for me to comment or even vote...but when I can....I do.

I reckon Langdon should run a surprise challenge, no notice, every now and then that is only open to people who have commented more than they have received. With no warning, people can't then give crap comments in the days leading up so that they can make it.......
It was done before I beleive...... |

It's taking me awhile. I have a slow connection right now, so it's taking me even longer than usual. Sorry, but I probably will not get to the other two challenges this week.
At any rate, I often do comment a lot on challenges - somehow I always find it just a tad irritating that people bitch about the lack of comments yet don't seem inclined to offer any or even be bothered to vote. Nothing personal - just my gripe for the morning.
