I do freelance graphic design and I know that I sometimes undercharge. I have a 14 page 4-color book coming up and I do not want to undercharge. Can anyone out there give me an idea what I should charge for designing this book? I live in Kentucky (small town) and do mostly print design, logos, etc. The problem is that being from a small town, most clients don't want to pay a lot for design, so I want to stay competitive.
Thanks for any advice. Edit to add: My normal charge for design is $65 per hour.

That's so impossible to answer without more info on what this "book" actually, it's purpose, its target audience, its expected distribution, and so forth and so on... I used to do this kind of work (actually still do, but I think now the kind of books I do ΓΆ€” "real" books of words, no images, for a publisher ΓΆ€” have little in common with the task you've landed. Nevertheless, back in the day, my rates for a physically similar pair of jobs could differ fromeach other by several hundred percent based onthese, and other, variables.

Your printer and bindery will appreciate it if you make the number of pages divisible by four (i.e. 16 pages, not 14). I can't help much with pricing because I always undercharge as well, though your hourly rate is not out of line. As mentioned, it really depends on how much time/work is involved and what they're going to do with it -- I think I'd charge more for a museum exhibition catalog than for my son's elementary school yearbook.

Remember, it will take longer than you think.
