as far as getting a photo ready to upload this what i do
file-
Save for web-
click- Image Size tab- New Size- type 640 on the largest # -
Save
this is all i do,
i use photoshop cs is this the best way?

The problem with that method is that you cannot apply a USM after the resize. I usually do the resize from the menu, apply USM if necessary (usually it is). Then you can do the save for web. Just don't use it for resize. |

save as, change the file type to jpg, increase the quality to 12. |

Resizing downward tends to soften the image... a slight USM after resizing is usually recommended to negate the softening from the resize.

Lelani, your method is fine and the use of USM afterwards is a good suggestion. Be aware that a sharpened image will often yield a larger JPEG at the same quality setting, so a resized image that would have been 149k otherwise might go over 150k after applying USM. Sometimes I bring the image size down to 620 pixels in order to get a higher quality JPEG. |

I never use save for web. I re-size and USM until I get the right quality and tweak settings as needed.
