So I am out in the mall with my wife..and she likes something she wants to buy for me.. and my response:
"well.. ahem.. hmmm... it is ...nice.. but... CAN YOU INSTEAD GIMME THAT MUCH CASH or ADD ITS WORTH TO MY CAMERA GEAR WISH LIST BUDGET?"...
and then she gives me that look one only slices on the most wretched of the beings.
Am I the only one doing that?

When I bought my 20D, I bought it with a big kit, you know how they advertise it, this lens for this and this lens for that, cleaning kit, tripod, mini tripod, soft case, hard case and so on.
I was dying for this Camera since they first released it, and my wife gave me half its price as a birthday gift, while we were really so tightened financially .. she actually had to save for few months to be able to get me this camera ..
Moral of the story .. You might be missing half a camera :)
Did I mention that I love my wife :)
Cheers, |

Dont get me wrong. I love my wife too. One of the reasons being: she first 'tests' how much I want something. And if we have the budget, she would surprise me (usually when I am browsing for 'that' thing - which by default is camera gear - and sighing:-) by saying:
"Ok why dont you buy it then? End this misery."
Just for that, it makes it all worth being married. Of course the 'nod' doesnt come easy.. but it makes the new purchase so much more valuable:-)
In a nutshell: you end up being happy.. but its on her terms. muahahahah!!

I'm permanently single, and don't make huge $$$, so I have to justify my camera purchases to myself. For example, will my purchase help me become a better photog? is it a lens or piece of equipment with cred on dpc with photogs I know and whose opinions I trust and respect? Is it within budgetary reach? and most importantly, what else in my life am I willing to sacrifice in order to be able to afford it?
That's how I rationalized the purchase of my f1.8 50mm Nikkor macro lens. To meet the last protocol, I quit drinking beer (don't like how I feel afterwards anyway) and now only drink max 2 glasses of cheap Chilean red. |

Oh, tell me you didn't... I'm on camera gear restriction, and I still wouldn't try that. Nothing like telling the love of your life, that her choice was meaningless to you, all you care about is that G.D. Camera!!!! You PIG!! Sorry... channeling my wife again... ;-)
Hopefully your bruises will heal soon...

The last three high dollar lenses I got I jokingly said to my wife that I think I need one of these, each time she said ok. Then I had to convince myself that I really needed it, which I could never do but bought them anyway...God bless her, I can't wait to try her on for the 5DII...;) |

You have the surprising ability to weigh the worth of things she would pick for me;-)
On a serious note, I have started asking for this budget adjustment a little too often...so every time she wants to buy me anything, there would be her, there would be me, and there would be mention of a 'lens'. I think she is >this< close to signing me up with a shrink:-)
Happy holidays!
