I sooo wanted to like this camera. For a street shooter who values image quality as much as invisibility, this sounded like a dream come true. And for my other love, architecture, it certainly looked capable. The image quality seems very consistent, and even at higher ISO speeds, images have a nice fine clean grain to them.

The DP1, by the way, is a compact-size DSLR -- sort of. It has an SLR-sized CMOS sensor, but the camera itself is the size of a compact.

Based on my reading though, you sacrifice a lot for that: Fixed lens (obviously) but no zoom, slow AF, painful read/write times, no IS or continuous focus, no macro mode, top ISO of 800, etc. And at ~$600, it's priced like a DSLR.

Back to kickin' the tires on that new Canon Rebel...

I picked one up about 30 days ago on ebay. Very lightly used. Love it, in spite of some of the negatives you indicate. I must say, "no zoom" forces me to think more about the shot. The other issues really don't come into play for me though. I rarely shot above iso 800, I don't use it for macros, and have not had a problem with the focusing being slow. Great images outdoors. Feels and looks very solid. Worth a look...

You like that design? If you have about 5-6K burning a hole in your pocket, you might as well go for the gusto.

Leica M8

...but, beware, 6 grand (plus 1500 or so per lens) doesn't get you the type of performance you think it might.

Just how bad is the response time? I hear its useless for rapidfire action/sports shooting. Street shooting isn't quite that fast-paced, but it is time sensitive. Does the AF really freeze when you lock focus? How long does it take to write a RAW image to memory -- in other words, from the time I release the shutter until the time the camera is ready take the next picture?

Holy crap! Love it, but I probably can't afford even a lens cap for the thing...

Apparently a lot of folks don't have this camera. Only two owners here at DPC. I wonder if a DP2 is in the works... ?

I shot with Olga Vasilkova's and Bob van Ooik's DP1 on a party earlier this year. I liked it a lot, but the price/performance ratio is not good enough. I wish more manufacturers would do this. What I would love to have is the D3/D700 sensor with a 30mm 2.8 prime and optical viewfinder.

But yes, I found it to be really really slow.

For 300 euro I would buy the DP1, but at this moment it is at 649.

The write times are slow. I wouldn't recommend it for action/sports shooting. For some reason I love it though. I think it could work well for street shooting. It is silent and small. I guess what I like most is that it pulls me away from my 50mm - 200mm zoom and forces me to try and think more. I didn't pay 'street' price. Not sure that I would.

I certainly won't. In fact, I think I'm going to let it pass. Check out Popular Photography this month -- the DP2 is slated to hit the shelves in February. It promises, among other things, to be faster. If it hits ISO 1600, then it's mine.

Thanks for the feedback.
