Some have wondered, even hurt themselves thinking..."What is a Best Boy?"

Well, I can answer your question, but I would have to kill you.

So, instead of a straight forward answer, here is a video produced by a 'Best Boy', or what in the industry we refer too as the Assistant Chief Lighting Technician, and his most excellent video.

And you think that you have a lot of extension chords, what we call 'Stingers', check out this cable we normally don't use much.

Admittedly so, definetly was not a ground floor production. The benefits of having access to equipment, man power, and time.

So, if you wanted to get into the business... Do you apply to be somethng like Second Best Boy, or Third Best Boy, to get your foot in the door? ;-)

Even without knowing what they were, I always figured the job of Gaffer sounded a bit more ... mature? And maybe less strenuous that the Key Grip. :-)

FWIW my mom worked as a Looper ...

Work you way up moving sandbags, running to get coffee for the boss, and placing heavy things where the Best Boy says too, because the Gaffer requested it, because the DP wanted it.

Don't have any desire to be a Gaffer. A Rigging Gaffer is so much better than the 1st unit Gaffer. The Rigging Gaffer is of with a crew rigging a set somewhere.

The 1st unit Gaffer handles all the lighting, and is my boss, is the whipping boy for the DP. Not to mention they can't leave the DP's back pocket, so they are stuck on set all day long as long as the show goes.

A Best Boy handles the rigging notes for the Rigging Gaffer, man power, time cards, equipment management, truck and stage electrical and lighting management, scouts locations, conduit to production and the UPM, handles petty cash, and gnerally a high stress job is a better gig, but doesn't pay as good as the Gaffer, but gets to stay off set.

The Key Grip handsles hardware rigging for electrical, but also handles set walls, back drops, dollies, cranes, and basic safty officials of the set, are the equal to the Gaffer pay wise, but is not equal on set. The "Key" is slightly subordinate to the Gaffer.

Looping is post-production sound -- adding vocal parts after filming. "Foley" is adding other sound effects. As I understand it, most filming these days yields an essentially silent film except for close-up mics right on the actors -- everything else is added in later.

My brother has some experience as a UPM (and one Emmy!).
