Is this correct? This is the most expensive photo ever auctioned?

EDIT: The third most expensive is a picture of a magazine ad !

It must be. The Edward Steichen’s “The Pond - Moonlight” was the most expensive for a long time.

Oops! Techinically Steichen's probably still is. If you read it says, "Interestingly, the record-breaking photograph was sold not at a photography auction, but at a sale of contemporary art. That might suggest that how an artwork is sold plays an important role in defining how much it can sell for."

I'm thinking this might score in the low 5's here and only if the challenge was Grocery Store, or CostCo maybe. But then I can't seem to ribbon or get my average much above 5.5 ... so no one will care what I think on the subject, not even me.

I see this as a 4 - 6 shot here on DPC depending on the challenge. However, it is a low res file and I can't really see any detail....it may be an unbelievable shot.

It's not "photography" in the sense we pursue it, it's a "work of art", it's conceptual in nature, the source is part of its appeal.

The record for most expensive photo sold at auction has been reclaimed by Richard Prince after one of his prints went for US $3,401,000 at Sotheby’s in New York. The previous record was $3.34 million for an Andreas Gursky diptych sold at Sothey’s in London in February 2007. This record-setting Prince image is taken from his untitled cowboy series, in which he photographed sections of Marlboro cigarette ads and got the photos enlarged to a giant size. Dated 2001-2002, the photo measures 100 by 66 inches and was one of an edition of two plus one artist’s proof. Prince’s works have always remained in controversy as some folks say that he uses other photographers’ work without giving them due credit. But, that couldn’t get in the way of his popularity. The record-setting bid was placed during a contemporary art auction on Nov. 14, 2007. In November 2005, an untitled cowboy photo by Prince was auctioned for $1,248,000 at Christie’s in New York, which was an auction record for photography at the time.

Note that the image is 100 x 66 inches, and bear in mind it's the only one he produced besides the artist's proof...

Do I think that this qualifies as "original art"? Actually, no. But the Art World is a world unto itself, weird things happen there.

So I decided that tomorrow I am going to take pictures of 20 magazine ads blow them up and sell them at a huge bargain for $1 million a piece. Fire sale baby 1/3 the price of Prince!

I still can't believe a picture of a magazine ad sells for millions.
