If I use one of the Nikon Picture Controls, such as Vivid, or one of my own customized ones, does this influence the Raw Nef file, or just the jpeg files?
Thanks. |

It influences only the settings that the RAW file will start with for RAW conversion. The NEF is not affected.
It will influence the JPEGs that are saved.

Thanks bassbone.
I want to understand better what you meant in the first line of your reply.
So, if I intend to do all of my processing in Adobe Camera Raw, from the NEF file, does it make any difference if I had begun with a Vivid Picture Control, vs say, a Neutral Picture Control?

No, it doesn't make a difference at all. What you see on the back of the camera will be the highly saturated version, but as soon as you open in Camera Raw the image will change to whatever you have your camera raw default settings at. I sometimes shoot in Raw + Jpeg, and use the camera settings (if I want to see for example what a scene would look like in Black and White). Then the jpeg obviously keeps the camera picture settings and the raw file, on first glance in bridge looks like it is B&W but when you open it, it is just the raw file, with no camera settings applied. Hopefully that makes sense.
Test it out using the RAW + JPEG setting, then you'll see exactly how it works. |

Yep, I think I've got it now.
Thanks, to both of you for the help.
Now to install the downloaded Nikon Custom Picture Control settings, to the camera.........landscape, portrait, and D2X.
