I am looking for a backpack to take on day trips where i want to take a DSLR, one long lens, and 1 or 2 other lenses. It would be nice to also have room for a jacket or some other stuff in a larger area of the pack.

So far it is between these two
Lowepro Fastpack 350
and
Lowepro Primus AW backpack

I like the option of taking out the camera without setting the pack down like on the slingshot 200 pack, which I have, but I find the 200 slingshot gets rather heavy being carried by only one shoulder. I was in a car accident a year ago and that shoulder still isn't as strong as it was and gets sore easily.

I would say you should consider what kind of conditions you'll be experiencing and if you want a couple specialized features. The AW has the weather cover like the slingshot series, as well as a tripod carrying system. The fastpack has a laptop compartment, which is nice if you use it, but takes up room if you don't. Of course, the AW is way more expensive, so if you're on a budget you might consider getting a cheap REI pack cover and either packing it with you or if you know somebody that is handy with a sewing machine, you could have them integrate it into the pack. You could also pretty easily replicate their "tripod carrying system," as it's mighty simplistic (flap of nylon with a buckle). Also, for whatever reason, the AW (which is slightly larger) doesn't have a waist strap, whereas the Fastpack does.
Couple other somewhat similar options: Tamrac Adventure Series- Available in several sizes (you can't access your gear while wearing it, though)
Crumpler Customary Barge There is also the Sinking Barge, which holds a 15" instead of 17" laptop. I was considering one of these, and you can access your gear while wearing the pack (or at least I could, I tried one out in person). Craftmanship is very good on these bags.
You could also take a look at some of the Kata bags- I've heard very good things about them. The larger bags only really come in dedicated Camera bags, but have enough room that you could put whatever else you wanted into the compartmentalized areas, or you might be interested in the DR-467
These were the options I was perusing. I ultimately went with a Slingshot, because I didn't want anything too big at the time, and there was a good sale on the 200 and I needed a bag.

I bought a FastPack 350 early this year and I like it alot. I use it like a backpack while walking around and slip my right arm out and rotate it like a sling shot bag when I need a different lens. I slip my tripod under the two buckle flap that goes over the camera bag section when on short trips. The computer section is great for keeping bounce cards flat and photocopies of select pages from my camera and flash manual.

There are two things I would improve if I had the chance. The handle at the top of the bag is a little small and I don't have large hands. I just have to make sure I grab it securly when lifting the bag out of my car. The second small issue is that the waist belt is not removable. What I do is buckle it backwards under the two buckle flap so it is out of my way for short trips.

All in all, I love having multiple ways of carrying the bag and the build quality is extremely good. Tons of room also.

Tim

thanks for your thoughts.

I haven't decided yet but hopefully I will be able to check out a few bags in a store on friday. So far I have been just looking on the net.

Accroding to BHphoto though, the AW primus does have a belt strap

I have the Lowepro CompuRover AW and just love it ... I travel for my job quite frequently and purchased this backpack so I could take my laptop and camera equipment along with my purse, sweater, book and other travel necessities ... it adjusts quite easily and I love having my hands free while navigating through the airport ... IMHO, you can't go wrong with this bag ...
