I recently bought the Canon 50D. I also bought a Speedlite 430. When I asked the B&H guy to add to my order one of those long cords that connects the flash to the hot shoe, he said I didn't need one because the flash could be used wireless. I've had the camera a week now and still can't figure out how to use the flash wireless. Have I just been missing a special button to push or was the camera guy mistaken? I haven't found anything about this in the manual and he saw that I was only buying one flash so I don't think he meant using the flash as a slave.

I think he didn't know what he was talking about... the Canon bodies can't communicate wirelessly with the flashes by themselves, you need Canon's wireless transmitter or a second flash mounted on the shoe in order to do so.

You need the Off Camera Cord, but it's not really that long, maybe 2 feet. If you want to fire it from across the room, you'll need some more hardware, either an ST-E2 (Transmitter only) or a 580EX (Flash unti with built in transmitter) to take advantage of the E-TTL functionality.
