Hey all

I live in a small community, populace about 20 000 max for whole county. I don't have any kids or significant others of my own, and every so often would like to use a human (apart from myself) in my shots.

I don't have any $$, and studio is set up in my home. Sometimes I can shoot well with people in situ, but that is largely dependent on luck. I sometimes get to shoot friends and las year got very lucky with my Cowboy shot last year and the (actual) cowboy I shot lived nearby and I knew his wife on a professional basis. I gave him an 8x11 of my Cowboy shot as payment/thanks. More recently I did shoot a model, gratis on both sides, for both their portfolio and a challenge entry, so that worked out well. But that happens very rarely.

For reasons of professionalism and personal safety I certainly don't want to come across as a sleazy type with a 'free-for-all' type ad, advertising for all and any types to respond to; but nor can I afford to run off countless 8x11s of the best shot of everyone who might respond and expects that as payment!

I have found good model releases for both kids and adults, so I have that covered.

Any suggestions on safely finding and using models in a small town?

Would a service like Model Mayhem not work?

Does your town have a local theatre troup? They always love having their pictures taken. Maybe the high school has a drama club? You cold always accost people on the streets.

Hmm, high school drama clubs (we have 2) would work well...and they probably have access to some costumes and props that I might be able to borrow...thanks!

Could try accosting people on the street but most people out here drive everywhere. If I want to do a street photography shot (as I did recently in that challenge) badly enough, I trek into downtown Ottawa and try to find a few other things to do to justify $$ of gas etc.

Good day Snaffles. You might also consider the local "Players Club" as they have productions showing both in the community where you live and surrounding hamlets. I will send you their link and you could communicate with them directly.

Try wwww.onemodelplace.com or www.modelmayhem.com. You don't necessarily have to print off 8x10's but you can probably work on a Time for CD basis where you can give the models 5-10 of the best photos on a CD. Most of the models I have worked with have come from these sites...and i've even had a couple of models pay me.

Let me know if you ever want to go into Ottawa on some weekend... I will gladly spring for the gas. Call me strange, but I would love to take photos in the market area during the evening on a weekend, particularly if it was raining.
