Hi,

What would people suggest for a telephoto lens that is above the 55-250mm EF-S IS f4-5.6 lens? What lens to get/avoid.

Recently got into photography and from what I have heard, it is best to get decent lenses. For this reason I opted against the stock twin lens kit and got canon̢۪s 17-85mm IS USM as my standard lens. Now I have been thinking I want to get a telephoto lens zoom. I̢۪m thinking I don̢۪t just want to get Canon̢۪s stock 55-250mm .

I have found the following, what do people recommend? Are there other lenses that I should consider?

- Canon Lens 70-300mm EF f/4-5.6 IS USM
- Sigma Lens 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM Macro
(how does this compare to the Sigma Lens 70-200mm f/2.8II APO EX DG HSM Macro?)
- Tamron 70-200 SP AF f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro

These are all in a similar price range (all be it a price range a bit higher than what i was looking to spend)

Any comments would be much appreciated

Thanks
-Adrian

How about the Canon 70-200 f4L. Obviously has less reach than the other lens you mentioned, but bear in mind with your camera you have a crop factor of 1.6 so the 70-200 effectively becomes 112mm - 320mm (you could argue the 55-250 becomes a 88mm-400mm equivalent), but you also have the benefit of F4 throughout the entire range.. And you are right, its best to get good lenses fro the off.. the 70-200 F4L will hold its resell value pretty well.

Also, its a very sharp lens.

Ahh, another good lens.

Question, do you know if the Sigma & Tamron do not have F2.8 throughout the entire range?

So my list is now below. How do they compare, whare are peoples thoughts.

You may want to check this site for Canon and 3rd party lenses. For sharpness comparison, they have this page where you can pick and compare any two lenses.

Photozone is another good resource when it comes to reviews of lenses.
