Today is Veteran's Day in America. Let us never forget the sacrifices of the men and women who have fought for our freedoms and continue to preserve our democracy.
Share your favorite Veteran's shots and to all our friends and DPC family members from other nations please share your Veteran traditions and significant dates. I have served with many warriors from other nations through the years and the one attribute found in all of them was the selfless dedication to a country they love. May we all strive for peace, but be prepared to defend our honor and a just cause. As we say in the Marines "Semper Fidelis"

All my gratitude goes out to those who serve and have served.
Not my 'favorite' vet photos, but some that were in my portfolio from my ten years in the Navy, where I clearly lacked the discipline and military appearance that the Marines stress. But I don't hold it against them - some of my best friends were Marines. :-)
Semper Fi, Jeff, and God Bless you, Melethia, Fetor, kleski, OmanOtter, cryingdragon and all other DPCers serving. |

This is not from my country but from Russia, remembering the people who fell for and defended St. Petersburg during the 900 day siege by the Nazis.
Don't have pics from my own country.

11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. In Britain (and I suspect most commonwealth countries) we observe 2 minutes silence at 11am each year. This year is particularly poignant as it is the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Not exactly a veteran shot but it is related. Here in Australia we also observe the 2 minutes silence on Remembrance Day.

Bob̢۪s future son-in-law, CWII Justin Fletcher was shot down in Tal Afar on September 4, 2004. Justin suffered a broken back and other injuries.
A "routine mission" in Iraq on Sept. 4, 2004, turned into a raging 4 hour firefight for Stryker troops, as they fought off heavy fire in a rescue mission launched after Iraqi insurgents shot down a OH-58D Kiowa helicopter and swarmed to capture it and the two pilots, CWII Justin Fletcher and his commander Stephen Suhr.

I am just 5 months away from starting my terminal leave before retirement after 20 active years in the Navy. The first half I really didn't think of it as anything more than just a job but the closer I've come to the end of it the more I've appreciated it and the people I've worked with. I think it all started after 9/11 and my job included actually typing the orders for my shipmates to go over to Iraq and in at least one case, not coming back. It's not easy thinking that after 20 years and two "wars" (and many other war like events) I've never been in combat but have typed the paperwork up to send others...I know if wasn't ME sending them or forcing them to go but it is still difficult to deal with.
It's one of the reasons I did this shot.
We've got a few of these around the building I work in, one I really want to photograph is the traditional boots, rifle and helmet with dog tags, but it isn't in a location easily done.
Thank you to all the Veterans who have come before me, the ones who are presently serving and especially those who have given the greatest sacrifice.

It's Remembrance Day in Canada. Ceremonies will be held at War Memorials across the country with 2 minutes of silence observed at 11:00am.
I can't watch this video without tearing up.
On November 11, 1999 Terry Kelly was in a drug store in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the stores PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00 AM to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.
Terry was impressed with the stores leadership role in adopting the Legions two minutes of silence initiative. He felt that the store's contribution of educating the public to the importance of remembering was commendable.
When eleven oclock arrived on that day, an announcement was again made asking for the two minutes of silence to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect.
Terry's anger towards the father for trying to engage the stores clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was channeled into a beautiful piece of work called, A Pittance of Time. Terry later recorded A Pittance of Time and included it on his full-length music CD, The Power of the Dream.

//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armistice_day
A global holiday to honor and respect those who do this dangerous and difficult service to their country, held on the anniversary of peace. They do their work for me whether I appreciate them or not, just like I have their best interest in mind with my political opinions, whether they agree with me or not.
They can represent for all of us an example of service to something greater than ourselves. |

I was reading today, that there is one British Airman, one British Sailor, one British Soldier, and one American Soldier left from WWI, the war to end all wars. It's a shame that it didn't. The French, the Germans, the Turks, are all gone.
All to soon this last handful of surviors will be gone also.
Even now the WWII vets are dwindling also, and the Korean War vets will follow in their turn.
So many have given so much for all our countries around the world. While this holiday was orginated in rememberance of the end of WWI, all the men and women who have served are remembered this day.
This is a day not to glorify the horrors of war, but to remember that people are capable of uncommon deeds and if need be sacrifice, in the service of their countries.
