I'm thinking the 5D Mark II may be a bridge too far. What do you think of me picking up a 5D (original) vs a 50D? You can find them now for $2,000. Mainly, I'm wondering about image quality of the 5D vs. the 50D. Again, it's the original 5D, not the Mark II.

Looking at your lenses I think u will be much better off with the 5D .

The original 5Ds in NYC are going used for USD1500 or so.... So negotiate down. There are quite a few hard up people dumping camera equipment as jobs are lost... They're a great camera - just choose a used version wisely... Oh, you mean a new original. I noticed than Canon has not put the originals on special offer yet (no 5D rebate in the email they just sent to me). I paid 2300 for a new one 14 months ago so negotiate down.

I payed $1900 for a used 5D kit with 7k shutter actuations. Sold the 24-105 f/4L for $850. Pretty good deal if you ask me. The image quality of classic 5D is great, and will still be great next month. I'm sure the new 5Ds can be had for under 2K in the next several weeks.

I also think the original 5D would be a great option. There is plenty of data out there to help you assess image quality, so let's list some of the things that are *not* on the 5D that the 50D has
- Live View
- The new, larger, higher resolution LCD
- Faster frame rate
- sRAW
- Integrated sensor cleaning (not worth a cent, IMO)
- AF microadjustment
- Updated menu system
- More user presets (two vs. 1)

the question is, how much do these things mean to you, for your shooting needs?
FWIW, I'm amazed that the prices on the 5DMkI have hele up recently. I bought one back in June for work, body-only, for $1899 net after rebate, and they are actually more expensive now, since no rebate is in place.

Interesting. The only thing on that list that really matters to me is the sensor cleaning. My 30D's sensor gets dirty all the time. Maybe it will be less so in this new climate I am in (lest dust in West Africa compared to Oman?). Man, I love that deal that bspurgeon got! If I could pick up the 5D with the 24-105 f/4 L IS for $1900, I'd jump at it.

Damn! I want that deal! My only concern is the lack of the sensor cleaning. I scratched my sensor on my 30D while cleaning it and it cost me $300 for a new one! Then the 30D broke on its own and I had to send it back again. That's why it's still in the States and I'm in Africa without a camera.

Given your experience with the 30D, you certainly have a right to be concerned. Do bear in mind that the 5D's "hot mirror" is the surface that you'd be cleaning, and that it is perhaps (depends on who you believe) more sensitive than some other cameras. The 5D also has a reputation as a "dust magnet" which is not entirely undeserved. I don't actually think it attracts any more dust than any other camera, it just shows it up faster. All that said, I have had no problems cleaning my sensor, and I have had my 5D for 37 months. YMMV.

ETA: FWIW, I don't really think the built-in cleaning adds much value at all. I don't believe it is very effective, and it adds unnecessary complexity. For me, it's perhaps the one downside of the newest generation of cameras.

I think the sensor cleaning is a joke. My 40D was always dirty. If you change lenses, it's going to get dirty. Canon USA-Irvine is right around the corner from me, so it's very convenient to get sensor cleaning. I sold my 40D to buy the 5D. The only features I miss are the custom setting presets and the live view for macro. After several weeks, I no longer miss those conveniences. I'm going to get a second 5D when I come across another stellar used deal.

I recently picked up a low shutter count 5D with grip for $1650. They can be had fairly cheap on Fredmiranda.com if you watch there people are dumping them like hotcakes.
