I just starting working with Lightroom, and I have found many presets all over the internet for Lightroom, and have the nearly uncontrollable urge to download them all. But I hesitate... that is surely overkill. So I have 2 lines of questions:
1. Does Lightroom slow down if there are too many presets installed? If so, what is that magic number?
2. What are your favorite presets, and where did you find them?

1. I've heard of people running LR with thousands of presets available; I've never heard of any performance slowdowns. I expect it might contribute to a slight delay when first starting LR, since LR has to stat each file in the preset directory to construct some of the menu lists, etc -- but that should be virtually unnoticable.
I'd think a useful organization of a large collection of presets would present more of an issue than actual performance.
2. I thought there were a couple of threads here about this, but after some searching I couldn't find them... A lot of people like Presets Heaven. I personally prefer Matt Kloskowski's Lightroom Killer Tips (here's a link to his preset archive).
I like Matt's site since he has a relatively low volume of presets (and they are generally useful); most other sites tend to have a lot of really extreme over-processing presets that don't serve much of a purpose, and just take time to wade through.
A handy tip that some people miss -- in the Develop module, hovering the mouse over each preset will display a quick approximation of what that preset would render in your Navigator pane.

My favorite preset is 300v1. All the adjustments are global except the last, which adds a vignette. Good thing to keep in mind when using this for challenges! LR presets are awesome. And yes, the handy tip about hovering the mouse is a very good one. Another handy tip: ctrl-shift-R will remove the preset and take you back to your original. Have fun! |

I recently bought a set of presets that I love. Presetopia Tell him I sent you if you buy them. He has a program going that helps out for referrals.

Does everyone know that Lightroom presets can be transferred and used in Camera Raw? |

I've done it manually, but is there a better way? |

I'm surprised that people buy presets. They are easy enough to do on your own and there are a lot of free ones out there. What specifically do you like about presetopia that makes it worth the money?

I'm surprised at alot of things people buy. I like the look, the variety, and the ease of having the presets done for me. They were done in a format that makes them available in CS3 and lightroom. To me its worth the money, as the time its saved me and the variety and ability to repeat effects quickly and easily. If you think its a waste of money, dont spend it. Personally my time is worth the expense and with a little tweak here and there my images are simple to make and yet arent cookie cutter stuff.

I'm sorry that apparently came across wrong. I meant nothing against you by my comment. I had just never considered it.
Of the presets offered what percentage do you actually use on a regular basis. I'm guessing there are a lot of neat effects that are fun but wouldn't be used all that often. |

Flickr has a group for lightroom presets. Members submit presets and links to other presets, some pretty cool one that I use often. Just check the discussion board out for all the goodies. |

The best ones in my opinion are the ones that involve using my custom tone curves or split tones. Sure, anyone can create them, but these are not your "anyone" presets, they actually have purpose and use. Some of them are a stretch, but I didn't create them so I could "bloat" the total number offered in the preset pack, I use a LOT of them on a regular basis. |
