I've read often about using wide lenses for shooting landscapes for whatever reasons, but haven't seen any material about zooming way in. I think the effect can be lovely.
Here are some of my zoomed-in landscapes, usually close to 640mm (400mm on a 1.6 crop body).
The Toronto skyline is about 60km away in this shot I took from atop the Niagara Escarpment near Burlington.
These shots were taken in Northern New York State, across Lake Champlain, showing the mountains of Vermont:
