I think Jurassic Park was the only one of his I didn't read. One of his first books was a collection of non-fiction emergency room stories. I still have it hard-cover on my bookshelf. It's called Five Patients. I also enjoyed Congo, Terminal Man, Sphere, Rising Sun, and Timeline (my favorite).

I was a huge fan and will miss him, too.

ETA, I think Congo, Sphere, Rising Sun, and Timeline all became movies, too.

Yes, Sphere was a good movie too, but whoever made Timeline, butchered it so badly. I was very disappointed in it.

I was too. My hubby liked it OK, but after reading the book, which was AWESOME, I was disappointed in it as well. If I remember correctly, Congo was a made for TV movie, and was OK, not great, but OK. Hard to impress me with a movie after reading the book, though.

I guess I'm a harsh critic because I thought all the movies were butchered and for the most part poorly acted. Had I not read the books I wouldn't have watched the movies the way they were made and presented. Jurassic Park at least had those special effects that were cutting edge at the time but that was about the only redeeming thing I got out of it.

Anyway, sad to see him go. :(

I've got a personal disliking of Jurassic Park (and the sequels) only because my hubby has to watch it EVERY time TNT plays it. That's about a dozen times a month. uhg.

I love all his other books!

Sphere was a pretty good movie.

LOL. Don't get me started on the Back to the Future movies that I have to endure!

ETA... don't mean to hijack. Very sad that he has left us... :(

What's interesting about Jurassic Park is how many things are taken from the first book and used in the 2nd and 3rd movie. The whole petradayctl scene in the 3rd movie and the whole aviary was actually Dr. Grant and the kids going in there in the first book. Also the raptors are so much more scary in the book.

Excellent book.

I loved the Jurassic Park books too. Been meaning to snag a copy of Congo. I am sure the movie did not do it justice.

Cry. :(

He was so prolific, so attuned to the world around him, so amazingly intuitive.

State of Fear gave the global warming people apoplexy, and made people think....

He was years ahead of his time in so many ways and really took a long, hard look at human nature.....and then wrote about it.

I will miss him.

I liked his books alot too.......congo was not a made for tv movie it actually was in the box office ....of course it was butchered as well..........

The Andromeda Strain is still my favorite. I've read most of his works, except for the aforementioned "State of Fear", which reportedly lost him the respect of many because of its anti-environmental sermons.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Disclosure. Another great book that got turned into a movie (a Michael Douglas and Demi Moore movie at that).

Larry, I think you'd like it, just from what I know of you and your stating that you like his other work.

I really liked it because it is well written and it makes you think......pretty much like his other work.

The main problem with it is that the global warming folks object to it.

They cannot totally refute it and that pisses them off.

Michael Crichton on Global Warming

Personally, though I think global warming has its points, I'm skeptical on numerous fronts, so I'd rather just change the way we're killing the planet and have mankind around for a while to argue about it.

Crichton isn't(wasn't) a hack writer, he is an academic, and a medical doctor as well as a writer.

He's 100% correct in that we should be focused on actual problems we have today rather than ones we speculate, let alone probably not able to fix anyway. We live in a screwed up world where the right (ex. Bush) scares us with terrorism and the left (ex. Gore) scares us with man-made global warming. There far better reasons to promote conservation and reducing oil dependancy but I guess they are not sexy enough to sell like man-made global warming.
