| My Toshiba laptop is just over a year old and for the last few weeks I have had difficulty getting it to maintain a connection to the mains, and it has got heaps worse over the last few days. Talking to the techie guy at PC World, it seems it is most likely to be a problem with the connection to the motherboard, in which case the only option is to replace the motherboard. The laptop is under an extended warranty, so getting it repaired isn't a problem from the cost perspective, but it may take up to six weeks to get it back, which seems excessive to me. So questions are, is six weeks reasonable, is that the likely problem, and if I do end up with a new motherboard, will that affect either data or programmes? |

Are you talking network connections when you say mains? Explain a little more in detail.

Mains as in electricity rather than battery - now I can only get a connection if I play around with the jack and then keep the wire absolutely still. Even then I can only maintain the connection for a short while.

Oo, that's not good. I really don't think they would take 6 weeks for a warranty repair. The longest warranty repair I've had was 2 weeks. Anything regarding the power supply generally need to be handled by the manufacturer. That's what I think anyway.

6 weeks is a little long, but I'm sure that's worst case scenario, unless it's being shipped a great distance. Either way, if it's covered under the extended warranty, great! Also, check with them, they may have a "rush processing" that you pay for, that can get it back sooner.
Before you send it in though, back up your Hard Drive. Some repair shops standard practice is re-image the HDD, reguardless if it's necessary in the repair. If the PC won't stay on long enough to do it, have a local PC tech back it up outside of the computer. It sucks to lose the data when it's unnecessary to do so. |

I had this same problem with my Toshiba...After the Dog tripped over the power cord and ripped it out. I guess you could say I'm rather knowledgeable about computers so I took mine apart and found everything seemed to be fine. I went to the store and bought a universal power adapter...$90 and figured I'd try that and it worked. Been working fine ever since.
I would recommend that you try this out. If it doesn't work you can usually always return the the power adapter.
Good Luck!

| Thanks for the replies - until it started having problems I backed up each week anyway, and haven't taken any photos worth keeping over the last month or so! Guess it is in to the repair shop with it - and fingers crossed it doesn't take too long. I'm going to lost without it! |

Already tried that one (well borrowed one from a friend) - the bizarre thing was it worked ok for two weeks and then back to the connection problems. |

There's definitely something internally it sounds so I think you made the right choice in sending it in. In my experience you can call and bug them about it (I did this because my boss wanted me to nag 'em) and we had it within two weeks).
I know how you feel, being computerless is relateable to being cameraless.
