An artist friend of mine asked me if it was possible to convert digital images to slide transparencies? I know i've seen something on this before, but I can't find it.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Yes they can make slides from digitals. But if you have a 6mp digital photo and convert it to slide there is 0 chance of it looking as good as a real slide, even if it were a perfect dupe. If you want a slide shot slide film.

the issue here is that you have to make a copy of the photo using slide film.
any time you make a copy of a photo the quality will be less.
not to say that it can't be done. I haven't heard too many good reviews from people in these forums, and have never done it in color.. however, I used to make slides from electron micrographs (photos of cells from an electron microscope) all the time where I used to work. We had a pretty good set up with the appropriate lights and a camera that has the bulb/cable release ability.
I'd have to have a reason to make alot of slides to invest in the set up.
My local camera club is trying to figure out what to do with this issue. It is a new club. The lead guy is a traditional film guy, but is experimenting with digital. Everyone else is using digital for the most part.
Digital presentations could be an option if they have the right resources, but I am not sure what those resources should be or if they are financially practical for the members.

what are you using the slides for?

You can have a slide made from a computer file placed on a zip disk or CD. I have had them made from 6meg and higher satisfactorily. A good photo lab should be able to do it. the one I use here in San Francisco, Red Shoes, charges $8 per slide. I use them in competition in my local camera club and do pretty well with them.

cool. you're post prompted me to do a quick search.
I typed in "slides from digital photos".
A bunch of stuff came up.. including this site
I'm going to investigate it... looks reasonable from the home page.

I've used Cantoo in Berkeley for several years.

If possible, set your image to fit the 35mm format: 2048 x 1366 pixels (8mb) is what we used when we had an AGFA slide imager at our shop, and these were rasterized at 4000lpi to AgfaChrome 100RX slide film. If you want to image at 8000lpi (about the limit of the film's resolution or grain), use an image twice that size in each dimension, about 32mb. There's no perceptible benefit using larger files than that.

This size is 10.5 x 7 inches at about 195ppi -- at that scale, remember that about the outer 1/4 or 3/8 inch will be clipped by the slide mount.

Hey, Karen, $4 is nicer than $8 and I like the idea of just uploading to them. Guess I'll try a couple too and see what happens & how long it takes. Also nice to know there's another good one locally, GeneralE. Good to have the reference.

I entered a local contest here in Edmonds, WA, they require slides for all entries, I had a local photo shop (Clear Image) make them from disk and only charged $1.99 each. They came out awesome.

WOW! Thanks for the help everybody. I posted this a few days ago, and forgot that I had. I almost posted it again. :-0

My friend is an artist (painter) and sometimes has to submit slides to galeries (and the like) for viewing. Problem is if he takes a 35mm slide and he is a little tilted or off center, etc, they won't even look at his work. He thought that perhaps he could shoot them digitally, crop, align, etc, and then have them converted to slide.

I'll send him these links.

Thanks again. You guys are great.
