I never did get my pinhole body cap made. I did find the drill. It's a 110V drill, and I think the very old transformer upstairs may even run the thing. I still need tinsnips, though I did discover my dad left a Diet Pepsi in the fridge from his visit in May. (I don't drink soda - figured I'd have to find a can at work or something.) So maybe, just maybe, I'll get my body cap modified by the end of the month. Mean time, keep up the nice work, folks!

lol Deb, you really should get yourself sorted as I think pinhole photography would suit your style.

Why not try what Christoph did?

i didn't have a camera cap handy so i had to improvise with a jam cab, some vietnamiese aluminium foil, cardboard and duct tape (of course), so here's what my brandnew pinhole lens looks like:
pretty cool, no? haha

i find the resulting pictures pretty soft tho. i mean it's supposed to look soft, but not THAT soft, right? my guess is, that the focal lenght/pinhole diameter ratio isn't right?

Aaaaaargh! I will be getting back to you guys. I decided that my handcrafted pinhole device was just too fuzzy, so I ordered a ready made one. The fellow told me it was shipped priority mail, but it never showed up. I e-mailed him, and he said the Post Office said that the pinhole body cap had been delivered last week. I had it delivered to the office, and no one had seen it. I just got another e-mail from the fellow. He put the wrong number on the address label, and will send it out again tomorrow. Hope it gets here by the end of the week.

In the meantime, you guys are turning out some gorgeous work. Keep it up.

for Thursday

I think I have a few shots still to comment on from the last couple of days - I'll have to catch up on that tomorrow.

And Deb, please do join us whenever you can, I'd love to see what you come up with. Same goes for everyone who originally signed up - please don't hesitate to join in anytime during the month - 1 or 30 images, I'd love to see what you've done.

I finally got a chance to process another shot from last Sunday. I really will get caught up on comments soon. You guys are all making some fantastic images!

A cup. Profound, I know. And dang there's a lot of little itty bitty sensor dust! Healed a bunch of it. Underexposed. Need to work on that part. But it works, more or less!

For the metal, I used a bit of a Diet Pepsi can which seems to be awfully thin.... I'll see what I can do with it tomorrow. I plan to take it to work and sneak out into the area around our building if we get sunshine.

Oh, and that whole "take the lens cap off" part? I really do have to remember to take the "lens cap" off. I'm using a bit of painter's tape. But when you don't look through the lens, you forget stuff like that!

yet another short article about pinhole photography for your reading pleasure

I shall be very bad and post more than one. I will also include the lessons I have learned thus far in my brief but interesting foray into the world of lensless photography.

1. The Canon Rebel Xti's "sensor cleaning" is useless. My sensor is covered with itsy bitsy sensor stuff.
2. When shooting with bright overhead spotlights or into the sun, I get this odd rainbow effect. Any clues on that?

3. A tripod or a non-moving flat surface, preferably combined with the timer or a remote shutter, seems like it would be somewhat helpful, as shutter speeds tend to be on the rather to very slowish side. :-)
[thumb]739132[/thumb]
4. Colors tend to be very muted, contrast tends to be very low. Both can be improved with levels, though.

5. When you show your nifty pinhole camera to the young man and his parents who own the camera store above which one of my coworkers lives, the wife will ask "Do you need to buy a lens?"
6. Exposure. Tought call, that. So far my method has been to set the shutter speed to yield a +2 reading, then 4-6 more clicks. That seems to get me in the ballpark.
7. Composition is TOUGH! I'm working to get used to the focal distance, what will and won't be included. And how setting the camera on the ground, a counter, a table, etc, will work to get what I want. Definitely makes for some interesting and different street photography.

8. It's hard to get pigeons to hold still. I'm still working on getting a pinhole pigeon photo. :-)

Oh, and the last lesson of the day - after working on your pinhole pictures for awhile, your other pictures appear AMAZINGLY crisp and colorful!

Nice selection of images there Melethia :)

I agree with all your observations and must add that this side challenge has given me a new outlook on photography. To me, pin hole photography is a whole different ballgame from me popping on a choice of lenses to take a shot. I doubt this type of photography will ever get the thumbs up from dpc'ers but its refreshing to see a few people submitting to challenges with their 'Art'.

I've completed my personal dpc goals for 2008 but will add a new one, to enter a pinhole shot and beat the current highest lensless score here at dpc :)

Just figured I'd amend that to reflect the likely DPC reception you will face. :-D
