I've been playing with the idea of becoming a freelance news photographer (bordering on conflict photography) for a few years now. Although I've never been in a war zone before, I'm not really a stranger to danger or traveling in 3rd world countries.

I've been searching for a newspaper/magazine/any kind of full-time photography job for months now, but so far, I've not gotten any offers. It seems that if I were to decide to take this path, now would be as good a time as any.

I know that most of the professional photographers on here deal more with wedding or studio photography, but I remember showing this site to the editer of News Photographer magazine, and he said he found the names of some well-known news photographers on here.

I've already read and watched as much as I could find on the topic, so I was wondering if any of you could offer me any advice that I wouldn't be able to get from a book or documentary. Thanks in advance!

There are really two main paths to follow in order to get into this kind of thing...

1. Get an embedded position with the military.
2. Go on your own dime as an independent photojournalist and hope you can sell what you shoot.

The problem that you are facing is that there are already a ton of people doing this. So you've got a lot of competition.

Check out Michael Totten. He is an independent war journalist and does an amazing job at telling the real stories of overseas conflicts. www.michaeltotten.com. He is good at answering email so you might ask him this very question.

Invest in good body armor.

Keep your head down when the shooting starts.

Bring spare underwear and a bag of diaper wipes for after the shooting stops.
