I am trying to find a resonable priced way to set off my old Vivitar strobes off camera. I have one slave that detects the light from another flash and it works pretty good but what I have been looking at are the ones you find on e-bay that work off radio frequencies so I don't need a strobe on the camera (I have a SB-600 I use on cam as the Vivitars aren't voltage safe to use on camera). Sender attaches to camera and recievers to strobes. Has anyone used any of these? If so how good do they work? Are the senders voltage safe for dslr's? I know eventually I want to use pocket wizards, but right now I really just don't have the cash.

I've heard lots of great things about the Cactus Poppers V2's for anybody that's on a budget, and in fact that's one of the products Strobist recommends. You should see what others have said about them (and yes, they don't seem to be as failsafe as PocketWizards, but they also come at a fraction of the cost). I don't personally own any yet, but I am considering getting a set myself as an economical alternative to the PW's. I'm sure lots of people here have more feedback on their functionality. I also read somewhere that you can order some insanely cheap ones from Hong Kong that work decently, if you're comfortable with that. I can't seem to figure out where I read about that though. Strobist encourages folks to buy through these guys, and I think his endorsement means a lot considering the size of his readership.
