If it's any consolation, I've been suggesting that the information be available during voting for about six years ....

So what were the objections leveled against the idea?

People should be voting on the image, not the comments or "explanation" of the photo captured. Plus, you know that many would give away their identity via what they say in the descriptive information and that would change the entire feel/concept of DPChallenge (losing anonymity).

Hard to buy that reasoning. If anonymity were that vital to the site, people wouldn't be allowed to pop in SP's every other challenge.

Ideally, it would be better if the repeating self portaits/husbands/wives/sons/daughters etc was not part of DPC, as it does remove some objectiviy after you have been here for a while. TimmyTheToo had a nice response in another thread where he stated that he liked photographing people and his family were his available and favorite models. I respect that. I mean we all should be allowed to photograph what we enjoy. I just try to be as objective as possbile when I can "guess" the photographer.

I've been emailed 3 times about my comments. All three thought I was an idiot. On the other side, I've only responded to 1 comment. And that person was an idiot and has since been banned from the site.

Makes a lot of sense. That has not kept me from laying the comments on photos from people with more talent than myself. It's part of how my own skill has improved and I have learned what I like. I have often critiqued some high scoring shots, and I stand by my comments. However, those members should also do what I do, and that is to interpret the comments in context. By this I mean, if I get several comments that say the same thing, then there may be something to it. If several have opposite opinions of the same thing, then it may just be personal taste. If I get a "poor lighting" comment from a new member with a 4.7 average, and a "nice lighting" comment from IReneM, then I will be more inclined to believe my lighting was good.

I would love to know the reasons that some pretty good photography always seems to still get some low votes. I know different people have different criteria, but it just makes me scratch my head sometimes.

Sorry but not sure if I was the only one who saw this and chuckled, I have a dry sense of humour ;) Actually having looked at some of your comments Marc I comment in a similar way quite often, short and to the point of what I thought when seeing the image, surprised I haven't been emailed more (actually I was once that's why I put the baghead on LOL it's off again now though).

Well, those 3 that emailed me aren't the only ones who think I'm an idiot. So maybe there is something there.

If someone comments with a question about my shot, I will PM them to answer. If someone comments with an inaccurate speculation about how I did something and I believe their vote was low because of it, I will PM them and explain the actuality of what I did. I would never ask someone to change their vote however and I don't put a bag over my head when I comment, since I don't mind answering PMs.
