I'm looking at getting a pair for my girlfriend and I so we can keep hiking and taking nature photography during the 11 months of winter that Canada seems to have. Does anyone have any recommendation for them? I'm thinking all terrain is what we'd want, i'm not sure about the climbing shoes with the crazy spikes and heel raiser but we will be doing most of our hiking in the Gatineau mountains.

All terrain should do fine unless you're going on a serious mountain climbing expedition. Make sure you get a pair with enough flotation for your weight with clothes and gear. I like Red Feather snowshoes, they have a variety of recreational models to choose from depending on what you want to do. I don't like the active hinge that lifts the tail, it makes the tips point down and easier to trip in deep snow.
You also might want to get a pair of poles, some people like them, especially on uneven terrain. I don't care for them, but it's a preference thing. The best thing about snowshoeing is that if you can walk, you can snowshoe.

MEC would probably be a good place to go to check out different styles and ask questions. You may even be able to rent a pair to see if you like them.

I prefer MSR snowshoes. The link is to the Classics, and they have another upgraded pair called the Evo Ascent, also.
Buckles in easy and tight, never had them come lose, easy off. Has great flotation and expandable (extras) tails for larger loads. Have teeth along the rails (metal) on the outside and the pivoting foot "claw" really gives good grip. Has a flip up thing for the heel, if doing ascents also to make it easier on your calves.
I had to by the 6 year old boy a pair for this winter, The Tyker

Or if your up for something fun, some cross country, i.e. Nordic skies, would be great! Depending on whether or not your in a heavily wooded area! But then again I have a bias being a Nordic skier!

Being from Ottawa, don't forget Bushtukah and Trailhead. They are real close to MEC.
I bought a great pair for my wife and I at Bushtukah a couple years ago. Can't think of the brand, but they were a bear paw style, Al frame.
