I'm not sure I saw anything in the description that said you had to go out and take a shot of someone who was genuinely suffering from poverty, in fact it said "Photograph your interpretation of the word poverty" why would you think anyone is being conned by a photographer staging their image? I think some people take their own interpretation of these challenges way too literally which in turn leads to all the threads about what is valid and what isn't. In turn those types of threads will be slowly but surely killing any creativity on the site as people start being more and more narrowed minded about the criteria and maybe one day we will just end up with 100 - 150 practically identical images, how fun that would be :(

I'm with you Mark. I guess as long as you get the 3 groups of people (ones who follow the description to the letter and bitch when others don't, the ones who are more loose with the theme and the ones who don't adhere to it at all, also known as shoehorners) there will always be arguments over interpretation. Since those niches aren't about to dissipate any time soon, I'm actually gonna stop following the scores threads from now on and just post my score occasionally, cos all the bickering really saps the fun out of the challenges for me.

It is difficult to rate photos in this challenge... There are lot of photos with childrens. Some of these photos are with apparent performance, but others are realy realistic or real.
It hurt heart when victim of poverty are children... So, it is difficult to be objective :/
Sorry for my english :) But i wanted to write this :)

Somewhat disappointed - dare I say it...As for as some of the images I've voted on, I am disappointed that so many seem to be riding on their lengthy titles to tell the story of what the image is meant to be of.... and in some instances I wouldn't have known the subject was all that impoverished except for the extravagant title (er... story). Hoping too that voters are not conned by pictures of otherwise healthy, nourished models with token make-up.
Okay whine over. Three great comments for which I am grateful. |
I have to say that I am surprised to read something like that!!! Some of us live in countries where poverty is not as obvious as in other countries and we have to stage our pictures... There are places in this world who suffer from so much poverty that it makes me want to throw up sometimes and I only wish this was not the case. BUT to take part in challenges on a side like DPC is you have to stage 90% of your pictures if you want to fit the challenge all the time AND submit a descent picture - I am so surprised someone could understand that as con!! I do absolutely agree with Mark-A the challenge description said your interpretation of poverty. People should have the description in mind when voting..... |

Whilst I'm still unhappy with my score (my fault) my 2 commenters are at opposite ends of the commenting scale, one just says 'setup shot' (and its not) whilst the second overlooks my flaws trying to make it more emotive and sees the image for what it's meant to depict 'poverty'
Oh, and in about 20 votes its climbed .9!

A few days ago I begged for assistance in choosing a pic, and then... sorry "Mentor" - decided on submitting a totally different image - just because of the "hard emotion" factor! The reality is, poverty (affecting young or old) is hurtful to see... Trust me! Those of you who had to "stage" your pics... be glad, be really glad!
Maybe that's why I love Africa with everything inside me... You cant ignore the emotion around you, you have to feel when you are in love with the place you live in and the people around you.
Viva Africa!!
Ps... my score is terrible (5.5/5.6), but someone fav it, and the 4 comments are all proof that I did succeed when trying to capture the emotion(and that's enough for me for now)! |

Hey Lynn long time no speak ;)
5.5 is not terrible even in normal circumstances but with the strange voting going on this last month - 6 weeks it's even less terrible :) I look forward to seeing which is yours after voting is done. |

Hi... :)
Lucky no-one shouted at me when I voted a few hours ago ;)
*giggles*
Man, man I'm frustrated with my country and the stupid credit card issues.. first time I have a half decent pic... would love to enter this month's free study, but havent got as far as sorting alternative payment out... Zanzibar was great.. now THAT would have been even better poverty shots.... anyways.. .Hope I dont disappoint you Mark!!!

My score is only shifting about .1 up and down every now and then, mostly from people changing their votes. I'm still yay-ing over the fave though!
