My wife and I always take our camera gear to Mexico. We've never had any problems. Just don't leave it laying around unattended. That includes not leaving it in your hotel room unless it's locked up. That's just common sense, no matter what country you're in.

So I went and only brought the point and shoot!
I decided that:
A) I JUST bought the camera and if anything happened to it, it would completely ruin my $1500 trip. Plus I would be out almost $900 for the camera and all the extras.
B) It was more a party trip than anything, which I've never done with my friends, and I wanted that to be the focus.
and
C) I'm no pro. I am JUST learning about photography. How many great shots would I actually be missing. Yes, my pictures probably would have been 10x more amazing, but I had a fabulous time, partied my face off, and didn't have to think about my expensive camera that I wouldn't be able to afford to replace if something happened to it.
When I've had it longer and am more comfortable with it and my financial situation, I'll take it everywhere.
Good choice, amazing trip..thanks for the help guys! :)

Great shots, Nancy. Looks like you guys played around some pretty cool stuff. Next time, especially if you're looking to go and shoot the area, take the camera. I have had mine there, looks like the Playa de Carmen area, and never had any issues. I am sure that it happens, but I haven't had any problems. Anyway, you still got some great shots and hopefully you have fun. One of my favorite things there is all the free tequila they manage to pour into my mouth. Mmmmmmm....tequila.

Yeah, there was definitely a lot to take pictures of. I loved Playa del Carmen, and we went back there for Halloween night and it was insane! But that night, I didn't even remember to bring the crappy little camera! My friend let me take use her camera though, so I still got to play. We were also in Tulum and Cozumel, and Cozumel is amazing! But overall it just wasn't a trip where I was focused on photography. I had had my new camera for....3 weeks at that point? Bought on credit. Just too risky. I knew I wouldn't be comfortable. But we are planning our next trip already for next year, and the camera is definitely coming. Along with a junky bag that doesn't look like a camera - still think that is SUCH an excellent tip.
I do agree, I liked the free alcohol EVERYWHERE. :) |

Nice shots! I recognized some of the spots in Cozumel since we were there in March. We're heading back that way next month -- can't wait! What did you think of Tulum? I don't know anything about the history of the ruins, but I'm tempted to see it. |

Tulum is definitely worth the ride out there. Even if you've seen the ruins, the beach below the cliffs is amazing. We spent 4 hours or so just walking the ruins. Good times, and I can't wait to get back.

Looks like you had a great trip. I'm glad the P & S decision worked for you.
Now, if you return for a trip that is more geared to photography, you definitely want to bring your DSLR. |
