You’re perfectly right!! I completely gave up using the USB cable transferring method and thus I have never, ever stumbled upon the same issue again – I have ONLY been using the built in card reader (desktop) since I posted the first message. |

This issue just took a more serious turn for me. I was looking through my archived images on a 500 GB external drive and came across some corrupt files in 2 related folders. Some were .CR2 RAWs and some were .psd files I had made from the original RAWs on the PC's drive. Of course, all the RAWs were OK when they were on my PC's hard drive, so both corrupt RAWs and corrupt .psd files must have been created by the PC when it was making the copy from C:\ drive to the archive drive. It's connected by USB, so again the common factors are USB and Windows Vista.
Fortunately, I keep a 2nd archive copy under another roof and when I checked it, all the files in question were OK. (The 2nd copy would have been made on a seperate occasion from the bad one.) I was able to delete the folders with the corrupt files and replace with a copy from the 2nd archive. I checked after copying and they all appear to be OK.
I went through the last year's archiving and didn't find any other corruptions. To guard against this USB thing, I've gone back to burning everything to disk. Filled a dozen DVDs and checked them after, and everythig OK so far. Looks like I will need to give Vista the Spanish archer!

I wouldn't blame Vista. It most probably is a hardware problem or a connection problem. Or your card is due for a change, maybe. Humidity could have been a factor too. Vista isn't the culprit here. |

What were the size of the corrupted files and do you have Vista sp2?

Not the cards. Has occurred with several different cards, and as reported above, the same files that become corrupt when transferred to my PC are perfect either when transferred to another PC or when navigated straight to them (without download) with my PC. Also has occured independently of cards when good RAW and .psd files on the C:\ drive have produced a corrupt file when copied to an external archive HDD.
It could certainly be a connection problem, though it would need to be a general one, rather than specific, as it has now occurred independently down 3 different paths, all USB. Wondered about trying a FireWire connection?

Most often corrupted files have been RAWs from a Canon 40D, so around 10 MB each, but I have also had some .psd files of up to 28 MB, and some JPEGs of as little as 100 KB.
I do not have Vista SP 2 installed. Do you mean it could be the cause, or it could be the cure?

Well, I don't know much about any of this but I always download the latest service pack. A lot of problems are sometimes solved that do not seem related.
I read somewhere communication can be hampered when long files are transferred from an external device due to a problem with the fat.......I donno, just trying to give you something to look into. Good luck

Thanks for the help, David. I have not had SP2 come in by auto-updates yet. Might need to go fishing for it!

Latest developments are tending to point to it being an issue with transfer of files by USB. I bit the bullet and installed a firewire board, firewire card reader (and firewire external HDD drive). Hoped that was it with all the expense involved!
Everything was good, but lack of problem was no guarantee of cure! Liking the speed of firewire 800, by the way!
Then one day I had occasion to bring home some shots taken at work with the 400D we have there, and I loaded them on my USB memory stick thing. When I transferred by USB, 2 of the RAWs came across corrupt. I also had the CF card with the files concerned, so I put that in the firewire reader and transferred by firewire. Both files copied over perfectly.
I'm not making any final conclusions but, so far, so good.

Col, I see that you haven't entered any challenges here yet. If you do, be sure to try to find the threads about windows systems tagging the camera files when they are being copied from the camera card. The tag will make the files not "original" by DPC standards, and if verified will be DQ'ed unless you have a valid pristine copy.
So far, I have had no problems with my files getting corrupted, but I only shoot jpg anyway, since the RAW files from the S3 Fuji are about 34 Mb each. I use 3 ext HD's, 2 USB, and 1 Firewire, and have two HD's in the G5 Powermac, and seem to have no problems with moving things all around between them.
It may help someone here with a Mac to know that if you take the card out of the reader without ejecting it, you will get a warning message on the screen, and the card will not work in the camera until you plug it back into the Mac. It will also not work in the camera until you either format it in the camera, or plug it back into the Mac. Once plugged back into the Mac and properly ejected before physically disconnecting the card, it will be fine in the camera, and exactly as it was to begin with. All the photo files will still be on the card.

Has anyone found a conclusive answer to this issue? It must be one of:
1) The camera recording to the card - does not seem to be evidence
2) The card transfer to the target medium
Is there a patch that can be applied?
Any help appreciated by a new 40D user who just lost a bunch a great pictures! |
