I have never had the pleasure of using an off camera flash but having watched both the Strobist.com DVD boxset and the Onelight DVD series i didnt realise how limited i was until now.
At present i have only the on camera flash and to be fair, it is pretty useless in my eyes, unless you can difuse it and soften your shadow. Of course it is not useless for all instances of photography, but for commercial it is not too good.
Its a shame that we have Xmas coming up soon otherwise i would would be getting at least 1 speedlite, stand and umbrella, and possible a set of Pocket Wizards as i am sure that this setup1 alone would improve my photography immediately.
The more i watch and read about lighting, the more inadequate i currently feel. I think i am suffering from 'flash envy' :( |

yeah they are handy.
i have a 550ex, and a 430ex, an st-e2 IR transmittor, stands and umbrellas.
i'll typically light the background with a bare flash ( gelled maybe ). and a flash through umbrella mixed with natural light for subject lighting.

if you get the stuff you're after before christmas, couldn't you get more stuff for christmas ? or are you talking about buying other people stuff for christmas ? bahumbug ;}

I have the kids and other half to consider for a few months now. Once Xmas is over i can concentrate on picking up a few bits and bobs here and there. I just feel like i'm shackled at times.
Having watched the DVD's i just want to go out and try all the techniques, but without the right equipment i cant and thats what frustrates me. |

You probably have a P&S right? You can do some cool things using a P&S as an off-camera flash. Unfortunately, this usually only works for long-exposure night photography, where you set the P&S on timer and run back to get your shot. I'm going out shooting tonight, will probably use either my P&S or my little 220EX offcamera through a pillowcase (this was extremely inexpensive, it cost $47 at Meijer). Here's an example of one shot I took at night using my P&S. I still can't do most of the studio lighting stuff, but I do what I can.
