If you're using photoshop and it's not for a basic challenge, I would recommend Virtual Photographer Plugin link for various b/w conversion styles. It's a fun plugin and it's free.

I really recommend reading the tutorial on B/W conversions on the site B&W Conversions. It provides great tips.

This is a quick edit using some of the techniques described in the tutorial.

Step 1 - Convert to b&w using hue/saturation (individual channels). Selecting each color individually, you can desaturate the color (red for example) and then adjust the lightness of that color band to suit your desires - I dropped the lightness of the red layer to darken the skin a bit. Repeat for each color (yellow, green, cyan, etc.) and individually adjust the lightness of the color. In the case of this photo because it is slightly overexposed in the backgrounds, I dropped the lightness of almost each of the colors to the far left. This way you have control of the darkness and lightness of each component.

Step 2 - I added a layer of curves - a very slight S-curve to boost the mid whites and darken the mid darsk.

Step 3 - I added some USM at large radius to increase local contrast - 25%, 50 pixels, 0 threshold.

It may not be the 'look' you are going for, but this provides a much cleaner and more contrasty b&w image. There are many other options and looks for conversion that you can use depending on the desire of the photo.
