I'm pretty sure im not the only one who gets frustrated with this but is there any way to disable the automatic settings adjustment photoshop does when i open a raw file in the editor? i shoot raw plus small jpg just so i can scroll through them and see if they are in focus and i look at the small jpgs and then decide on which raw file to edit and when i open the raw file it looks nothing like the jpg version because its doing its own automatic adjustments to it and the jpg version looks much better.

Which RAW converter?

In CS3 Bridge >Camera RAW Preferences >Default Image Settings. Uncheck Auto-Tone adjustments. I also check Default Specific to Camera by Serial Number.

How do you turn off the sharpening, brightness, contrast and black point settings? Not everything starts out at zero.

The jpg you're looking at has had in-camera adjustments applied, which is what makes it look better than its RAW equivalent. When you're opening the RAW you're seeing the file without any of the in-camera adjustments.
