please tell me (without sparing feelings) which if either of these shots is good/better?

The shots look great to me! A human would add much needed interest to the first one.

the left shot is cut in half by the railing. yuk.
the right shot shows the railing being held up or being repaired. Again, not 'pretty'

The background landscape mountins are gorgeous. I like the one on the right better. maybe move in and don't show the railing at all? or get to the right of it and keep it on teh left of the pic as framing item.
the lighting is nice, right time of day for these shots. i like the golden tone of the light on teh railing, but the railing i think anyway, detracts from both shots.

They are both quite nice pictures. I like the one called "Jericho" best. The hills in the background are lovely - so many layers and tones.

I prefer the one on the right out of the two. The left one has that in your face blurred fence destraction and that's mostly all I see. The right one has the railing leading the eye through the image with the backdrop of the wonderfully layered mountains.
