What image number did your first shot show? I just picked up my new 50D, and noticed the very first shot has the image number 1742. It was my understanding that the image number reflects the shutter click count. If so, why the heck does a new camera fresh out of the box start out with such a high number? I expected that there would be some shots taken by the manufacturing process as they QA the camera...but 1741 of them? SO I am wondering what others first shot was numbered as.

Maybe your memory card ended with 1741 with your previous camera?

omg - that is it. I just checked the last pic I shot with that card and you are right. SO I guess that number reflects the CF card and not the shutter. So, how do people always say they know their shutter count?

You can reset the numbering sequence in the menu. If you reset it when you first get your camera, it is easy to figure out how many photos you have taken.

Some Canon 1-series cameras have an accessible counter, at lease if you have some third party software to read it. I'm not sure if the most recent ones retain that feature. The non 1-series cameras have always been pretty much impossible to read, thought I am pretty sure Canon can tell.
The file counter is a good indicator only if you haven't accidentally reset it by inserting a card previously used in another camera, as you did. It is possible to avoid the problem, but even a reformat in-camera will not do so. I believe that reformatting all cards in a computer, however, will avoid it, but I am not absolutely sure of this.

Okay, I did find in the menu that I could do a manual reset to the numbering - so I was able to undo the problem I created by shooting with an old card. I then reformated my CF's through the computer and all is well now. Of course I will be off by the 7 I shot before doing the reset.

There is a way to get the shutter actuation reading from your 40D or 50D - you can dowload the tool from here:
//astrojargon.net/(X(1)S(j2tybb45fcltsv45quufpq45))/40DShutterCount.aspx

Short version - PC based only, download and unzip then drop the exe in the dir of your EOS Utility install (it leverages DLLs from that to communicate w/ the camera). Connect your camera via usb cable to your computer; launch the applicatoin, turn on the camera, hit the "get count" button in the application and voila...

I've run a few tests on it and it seems to work pretty well... It was interesting to get the shutter actuation count on my 40D... With all the card swaps, and even having to swap CF cards between cameras on the same shoot (don't ask... LOL) there was no way I had a clue based on file names... over 27k for the 40D, and I'm over 5500 on the 50D.

Hope this helps!
