My first idea was to shoot timfythetoo, but then I realized you were talking about taking a photograph...

I was all excited when I saw this challenge come up now. I know a spot that is good at this time of year, checked the weather forecast (rain today, sun tomorrow), got myself all organised and ready.

But now, realising that I'll be competing against zoo shots I don't think I'll bother. No matter how good a shot, my subjects just won't compete against good shots of exotic animals like the big cats.

Awww c'mon Sheila, give it a go...you might be able to get harbour seals, orca, eagles, ravens...

Good point. Hmmmmm... Zoo trip or a walk along riverbanks?

I don't have the lenses for those, (believe me, I've tried, since we see ravens and vultures daily) nor a boat for getting close enough to whales. I wish I did, since the humpbacks are migrating now, too.

And I really don't think a raven would stand much chance against a swimming tiger :)

I might still go and try for some shots for my upcoming sale, but I doubt I'll enter.

Have heart, peeps - if I enter, it's gonna be a pigeon. The red tufted ear squirrels are just too darn fast for me to shoot, and those are the only two options I have locally.

Roadkill? ;)

You could always shoot before you shoot... that'll slow 'em down, no?

I'm not sure who I should be more upset with, Simms for that below the belt hit or Mrs Yanko for spilling the beans. :(

No way. You should be shooting large herds of people. That's your wildlife.

I'm not sure shooting large herds of people is allowed in many places nowadays . .

I want Deb to do a Red Tufted Eared Pigeon - I bet Art could find one :- )

Oooh! I got just the shot today! Almost like those shots of deer that Saberi and those guys get in that nifty park in England. All misty and such. Just needed a tad bit of sunlight to poke through to really highlight the wildlife....

And BeeCee, I did indeed have to stop to avoid hitting one of those little red tufted ear squirrel critters today. Shoulda gone back with peanuts or something and lured him into my car. Then I could have stuck him in the fridge for half an hour to slow him down a bit....

Just because someone declares "zoo shots are ok" on this thread, don't think that 90% of voters are even paying attention (because they aren't). The top 10 animals in the last wildlife were all non-exotics as I recall. Shannon's was the closest and his tricky title was, I'm sure, an attempt at stemming the anti-zoo vote.

If you can make your zoo shot look natural, then I think you are good. But the more exotic your animal is, the more you will want to provide "context" rather than a tight shot to avoid showing the cement walls. Just my opinion.

EDIT: If you look at the last challenge, a little old chickadee beat a tiger by a tenth in the 11th-20th group. :)

Do you feel the challenge is to take the best picture you can which you think meets the description, or to win a virtual ribbon? Previous experience has shown that the voters are interested in well-shot images of mundane species in addition to the exotics ...

crap... I took this zoo shot last week. :-) Not at all wildlife, but I'm sure would get some interesting comments.

Only if you PROMISE to have someone else take pictures as you blithely open your freezer fridge and discover just how many things squirrels will eat and how creative they can be about hiding them ;-)

ETA: even better if he's in the fridge!

Well, I can still take the best shot I can, even if I don't enter it. But after my last couple of entries, I'd like to score better than a 5, so will probably only shoot for myself and sale. :)

When it comes to "wildlife", the zoo or the aquarium are pretty much my only options. You're not going to find too much wildlife in the wild around Philadelphia or right across the bridge in the good ol' NJ burbs. So if I end up with another 4.5, so be it. To me the fun is in taking the picture and hitting the update button. The score really doesn't mean all that much.

edit to add: not that I'd ever turn down a good score though...

Murphy's law is in effect up here in Canuckistan....

As I was driving down to the local cornerstore for some icecream, about a bazillion (OK a dozen) WILD turkeys happily trotted across the road only 30 feet away...

Then about an hour later, on the way back, two deer crossed the same road and casually wandered onto the back of my 1/2 acre of Green Hell, only to have promptly melted into the underbrush...

AND OF COURSE MY D40 WAS NOT WITH ME!!!!!!!!!

For the rest of the week I am not leaving my house without that camera.

Bummer, I got my best deer shot ever about 10 days ago. Just glad it wasn't better.

We get a lot of deer in the neighbourhood but they're just not that interesting when they just stand on lawns and munch. They also browse along the top of the rocks that go straight up from our deck, but I haven't figured out how to get a good shot of them up there. Any suggestions short of climbing on the roof?

This guy was lying down, watching us. He must have been there for nearly an hour while we continued our activities on the deck below him.

Aw jeez! You have your own pet deer and you're complaining?! Just toss out a few handfuls of 'Bud' (Ehehehehehe ;-) and then you can shoot stoned deer wandering around doing amusing things!
10/13/2008 07:53:25 PM · #49
Lol, just what I need; a stoned deer falling off the rocks, panicking when trapped on the deck, and kicking in the patio doors!

I can just see some skunk of a lawyer showing up on behalf of the deers family :)
