You either need to be not very threatening to the bees and butterflies or not threatened by them to shoot with the 60mm...

I used to own a Sigma 105mm Macro (great lens) and now own a Nikon 60mm AF-S Micro. As for distance there does not seem to be that great a change as it is measured from the focal plane so the distance from the end of the lens to the subject is about the same for me. My 105 extneded when focusing but the 60 AF-S does not so that is likley the difference.

However, if distance is an issue for you (more likley for lighting your subject) then maybe a Nikon 200mm Micro would be a better although more expensive option.

Although not many use it on this site I like my Tamron SP AF 180mm f/3.5 Di LD IF.
