Anyone familiar with the NYC area? My daughter needs to go to Columbia U. tomorrow to visit a friend. We were going to drive her to Poughkeepsie, and then she'd take a train, which goes to Grand Central.
Or she could save time and get off at Harlem-125th St. According to Google Maps, then she's only a mile away. But is that an ok neighborhood for a 19 year old young lady unfamiliar with NY by herself? Is it easy to catch a cab there?
Or should she go all the way to Grand Central, and then take a cab from Grand Central to Columbia? Or maybe even from an earlier stop?
Sorry, I've lived in upstate NY for 32 years now, and I know nothing really about travel in NYC! (I have an excuse, I'm from Indiana and rarely go down to NY City.)

I don't know about the cab situation at 125th St. -- I wouldn't recommend your daughter walk in that neighborhood alone, though. I would take the commuter train to Grand Central, then take the shuttle train (subway) to Times Square, and then switch to the uptown IRT subway train (#1) up to Columbia U at 116th Street. It's a bit of a slog, but... that's just what I would do, anyway.
Here's the MTA site for NYC, if that helps:

Good luck! |
