Now is the time to be buying stocks in strong companies that are currently trading low.
I was working at a savings and loan in 1987 when the dow crashed 500 points in one day (22%). My boss and three others were telling us pions that "now" was the time to buy.
They bought $2000 each in stocks that first week. They put $50 per week and then on occassion they put a few hundred here and there into the market for years after that....up to this big crash.
I'm still friends with one of them. He says this crash is not even putting a DING is what he has held since 1987. I told him that I wished I'd have listened to him back then. He said, "listen to me now"..."do some research in good companies and buy over the next six months".
I'm going in...........

Now...I didn't say I was going CRAZY !
I just put a $100 order.
I'll put about $50/week for a few months.
My property tax just went up so I can't put what I COULD'VE put if my state government would have kept my tax STEADY !

Funny! I put $3000 into a few stocks (ones I use and have faith in). Not to mention that I bought them about 5 points higher than the 52 week low. They are both down about a point or so now, but they are strong companies and their 52 week highs are about 3 and 4 times higher than they are now. So squat and wait and add a bit here and there.

Keep them where they are and drop a few bucks in every week or so.

If you think about it - as painful as it may be for some people who bought when the prices were higher, stocks just went on sale! So if you want to know that you are buying low so you can later sell high, now's the time to buy...

Strange that someone will run out and buy a $200 pair of shoes when they go on sale for $150 even though they will be worth practicaly NOTHING in two years..(try to sell a two year old pair of shoes on ebay) but will not spend $150 in stock that would have cost them $250 a year ago !

Although I agree with the general concept it's a fire sale on stocks, that analogy always bothers me.
People aren't investing in shoes with the expectation they'll have more money to buy real things later. They just want something to put on their feet.
Otherwise, we'd all be barefoot, naked, and starving. :)

Did everybody buy while stocks were on sale last week? If so, you made a killing today!

This jump is by no means guaranteed to hold. I'm sure there will be a sell-off tomorrow and then we'll see where we go from there. The credit market hasn't loosened yet and that's the problem, so why suddenly are we 10% better today than Friday?
While ken's advice is great, I think the most important part of it wasn't to somehow have timed the bottom with $2000, but rather put in $50/week over a long period of time...
I took a portion of my money out before the second half of the crash, I'm not putting it back in yet. |
