Heading there tomorrow - any "must sees" besides the cathedral? Nice stops along the way from Frankfurt to there? |

I saw the Irish Times Pub but didn't go in. Never did find Les Aviateurs, unfortunately. I blissfully assumed since the internet told me my hotel had wireless service that I could look up the address when I got there. Well after my GPS failed to get me to my hotel by car (blocked roads - had been for ages, too) I parked, found my hotel on foot, then discovered the hotel did not have internet capability.... hate false advertising...
As for Strasbourg - of course it had a cathedral.... It also had hordes of people wandering about aimlessly (called "tourists", I suspect), lots of people speaking French, and sidewalks with surprises - people walk their dogs on the sidewalks and don't always clean up afterwards, and the occasional reveler overindulges and uses the sidewalk in place of the good ol' Roman (?) vomitorium.
But my best advice for those who only have a day or so is to skip Strasbourg and go to Baden-Baden instead. Saturday morning I headed to Baden-Baden and found it to be a delightful town I will re-visit, though hopefully avoiding the 10 km stau on A5 during which I never got out of first gear.... (My other best advice - trains may cost more but are WAY more convenient than driving!)
Some random tourist shots....

lol, yes Les Aviateurs is a hard place to find. I agree with what you say about Strasbourg and the sidewalks etc. I was there for 10 days working and if you have time to avoid the 'tourist' areas, there are some great little cafes and bars etc, also some amazing little side streets with great old buildings and river views. Unfortunately, I didn't take my camera when I was there, but, if you do get chance to go off the typcial path, there are some treats ;-) |
