How do you shoot? Do you leave room for cropping or do you try to get it right from in the camera to avoid cropping later?

I am curious. I always tried to get it right in the camera and I understand that certain curcimstances you have to crop. But in the general terms when you shoot clients. Do you shoot to crop later or try to get the crop right in the camera to avoid doing it later?

I shoot to crop. Mainly because I always have a tilt. Looks straight in the viewfinder, but then when looking at the shot, it's tilted. So now I allow crop room. Plus it gives more freedom to work, and with the 10mp the crop won't really hurt, unless it's an extreme crop.

Now with that said, I didn't crop my portrait entry and really should have.

When doing portraits? I always leave room for the 8x10 crop. A tiny bit of headspace at the top and a pretty good size chunk at the bottom that can be trimmed if need be. 8x10 is a very popular size. You don't want to cut off half of little Johnny in the photo because his mommy wants to put him in small frames for gifts to relatives :)

I shoot with 11x14 and 9x12 in mind, so I leave room when framing.

I try to always leave some crop room so I can make any size print the person may want.

Good! Good! I am learning something today. DPC has paid its dues for the year. :)

I learned to shoot loose way back when as I shot for a newspaper and they never knew if they were going to need the shot to be vert or horiz, 1 2 or 3 columns, etc. Quality in a newspaper isn't all that high anyway so it's not an issue.

But that got me in the habit of shooting loose. I've learned to tighten up some because I shoot a lot an not having to crop every bleedin' image saves time. Also my studio isn't a ballroom so shooting loose gets crap in the BG - edge of BGs, ceiling, etc. Every once in a while I fill the frame and the client wants an 8x10..things get cut off. Oh well, what can you do?

Higher MP these days allow you to shoot loose and deal with it later without the compromises of a few years ago.
