Well, I may not get the brown (but, who knows...voting ain't over yet). However, I so agree with whomever said that the early low votes are getting really old, really fast now!
Anyone else notice that there seems to be something wonky/strange going on with voting in here lately? I don't know about any of you but, I feel that there is something very weird as to how the scores and the voting is going. There seems to be an inordinate amount of very low scores lately and then, we have those that are very high.
From what I'm hearing in terms of another conversation in another thread, only those with phenominal technical knowledge and skills are going to be able to compete well/ribbon. I'm noticing that the cleverest of ideas is not going to gain the higher scores. A shoehorned entry that is technically perfect is what is going to get the higher votes.

I'll have to disagree with you. What still wins or scores high 99% of the time are the photos with good technicals AND meets the challenge in the most obvious and most cliche ways possible.
ETA:
Basically voters treat the challenges as if they are at a stock site such as iStockPhoto or Shutterstock doing a search for the challenge theme. So for example, if the challenge theme is "Anger" then they look through the challenge for photos that scream anger the loudest and score those higher. Unless those photos are so poorly shot they always stand a great chance of at least finishing in the top ten even if they have zero appeal otherwise. It is why many ribbon winners often don't have the most favorites in a challenge even though they get way more exposure being on the front page. Once the challenge is over their appeal fades because it was all based on conveying a topic. Unless you aspire to being a successful stock photographer you don't want to go down or stay on this path for too long.

Well, it came up from the first 2 votes for sure...which is a good thing - but it sure takes the fun out of it
when the first votes are so dismal. But, there are some lovely shots in this challenge and I will have fun
voting on them and leaving decent scores that reflect the effort and creativity involved.

I so agree with you on the point that the higher score voters do search the entries in any challenge for photos that scream stock shot. There's no doubt there. Where I have a disagreeance with your points is in the idea that these types of voters will allow "shoe horns" into mind and score them high IF they even remotely convey the challenge topic but, have that "look" to them. A case in point is one of the ribbons in the pyjama challenge. No doubt, it's a goregeous shot and extremely well done. However, the interpretation of pyjamas was not really as clear a focal point of that shot. It was a very beautiful and technically well done shot but, it really did not convey the subject of pyjamas as clearly as a lot of other very well done shots in that challenge. It simply had that "look" that DPC voters tend to go for.
I do so agree that one doesn't want to stick within that realm of stock photopgraphy as one can lose their sense of style and artistic flair quite readily and be stuck within the world of stock photographer which doesn't really bode well for other arenas within the photographic world. However, you have also made an excellent point in this by saying that. The more ribbons one amasses in here, the more "pegged" one can become into the stock world and the less able one may be to be able to please other types of audiences within the photographic world.
Excellent points and well said. It surely speaks to those of us who are consistently scoring within the 5 ranges in here. My shots that have not done well in here, have done wonderfully in other areas and sites where stock photography does not bode well. Which raises another point...for those of us who are not aiming for stock photography excellence, aiming for a ribbon in DPc is kind of like wanting to be able to shout in a library. We're always going to be hushed! ;) |

We just have to take better photos, I guess. My scores are low too. We just have to come up with creative ideas for a picture that portrays the subject of the challenge the best.
Half of a photo is the actual lighting, sharpness, framing, and composure. The other half of a photo is the creativity that really makes your photo stand our from the rest.

Still voting at the moment and commenting on every image - Have to say there are a lot of images let down with poor composition in this challenge. A couple as in every challenge really stand out and I think we know who the winners will be!
Good luck to all |
