It's actually a good law. Medical professionals and police are after all just as human as everyone else. They make mistakes too. These people may make a huge error and feel great remorse, but have always been told by their lawyers that they should not apologize as that can be used in court as a plea of guilty. This allows them to share their remorse without it being use against them in court. They still can be sued - it doesn't absolve them of anything by apologizing. I'm sure the Canadian government is looking closely at this since studies here in the U.S. have shown that when an apology is given, and the injured party truly sees there is remorse, they are less likely to sue in the end. Most are satisfied with the doc nurse, etc acknowledging their error followed by new practices put in place that will prevent the same event occurring again.

I agree it is a nice law, but tell that to the now legless man!!! lol

I'm sure a doctor can't just say I'm sorry and get away with something like that

no, it sounds like the doctor could actually acknowledge that he/she messed up, and get that load off his/her chest without worrying about openly admitting guilt, and, yet, will still likely be sued.
