I am not scared of PP in my work, but even I will admit that one is heavily altered due to the challenge of "fairy tale"...

Thanks for sharing. And wow! PP really brings about life in an image!! I really have to learn a lot I think.. usually my images are just cropped, (de)saturated, sharpened, contrasted, and that it. For now I only use Gimp, and honestly, have not used the layers in there yet.

In a case like you posted, you could try to expose for the sky, shoot in RAW, and post-process for the foreground. An example (yes, I realize the final result is the cheese you specifically stated you didn't like), I took this in RAW:
Then, using the RAW post-processing technique that Judi beautifully describes in her tutorial here, I ended up with this:
Just a starting point. YMMV.
