I've had my D80 for over a year now, and it really has been a great body for me; my first dSLR.
That being said, I have outgrown it in a year. As hanserik mentioned, it does have trouble with high ISO.
I've moved up to the D90 (As opposed to the D300) because I care more about the sensor and saving some money than I do about build quality. This is the same reason that I got the D80 as opposed to the D200.
As far as I'm concerned, the best bang for your buck is the D80.

| as a Nikon user I say buy it, find a deal and grab the camera/kit your eye catches... BUT don't buy any additional lenses until you are willing to invest. Using a metaphor, I had always thought of my camera as the car and my lenses as the wheels, I can now tell you that I know what everyone means when they say spend your money on the glass, The glass is the car, the wheels are the cameras.. cameras depreciate and sell for a mere fraction of what you paid for them, even if you take good care, but a well taken care of lens can gain you back as much as 90% of your initial buying price years later. so camera bodies come and go but a good lens is an investment. |

I'm back. Newegg.com has this
Canon EOS Rebel XSi Black 12.20 MP 3.0" 230K LCD Digital SLR Camera w/EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens
for $649.
I've ordered from them before. The price is right, the camera is new (not refurbished) and I think this would be a good next step for me. Thoughts?

You'd be hard pressed to find a better new camera/lens combo at that price (I've actually considered dumping my 20D and getting an XSi as a backup). Worth noting that Dell offers the same setup for $620 shipped. |

I second that. I bought the XSi a month ago.. but instead of the kit lens, I got 28-105mm one.. added a few goodies (4GB card, a bag) and paid about $860 delivered. I would say jump on this deal. In fact Costco has a $799 special going on right now for body+2 lenses, but not sure if getting the sub standard 75-300mm is worth it.
Good luck!
ETA: Just make sure it is in stock (call them to make sure).. holiday season around, they might soon put these backordered.
