Got a weird problem cropping up when i shoot lately. I will line up a shot and when i hit the shutter my view kinda looks dim thru the viewfinder and then the camera just seems to lock up. the lcd will display "err 99". I can't be sure yet but it seems to only be happening with my 50mm lens. Anyone ever experience this?

try

1. taking the batteries out for a few minutes
2. cleaning the contacts
3. a different memory card

Try everything karmat says. If that doesn't work, take it in to your Canon dealer or favorite repairman. I had that happen with my EF 17-85mm, and it turned out to be something electronic in the lens itself.

if it does turn out to be the lens, it might be cheaper to replace it for $75 than pay the repair cost ...

Does it have an aperture ring? It needs to be set to the smallest aperture. (I think?) My Nikon will give me an error if its set wrong too. Something worth checking out anyways.

edit: Something to try but a quick search on Google shows references to more like what Karmat was describing

My oldest 40D was doing that a couple of weeks ago. A few shots (any lens) and Err99. I sent it to canon - needed a new shutter. It was 12 days beyond the one year warranty and they honored the warranty and I had it back in 8 calendar days, no charge for return shipping. (I am a CPS member so that may be a factor).
