Hmmm, I thought this shot stood a good chance to be above 6 (and I was very careful to meet both abstract and emotion), but it looks like a lot of low scores out there, so I won't complain...

Sherpet, I can understand why you would look at them w/o titles. Still, I think the titles are important since making the viewer feel the emotion was only one option in the challenge. The "conveys an emotional quality" implies to me that being symbolic of an emotion rather than making someone feel the emotion w/o title also meets the challenge, so the title can be key to understanding what the symbolisms are. Of course, that's just the way I read it. :)

ETA: And yes, I agree, SO MANY of these are not abstract :o

Jeez, hard to believe that with such a low score I'm doing better than many of you.

And that is exactly where I had the biggest problem trying shoot this challenge, what is abstact to one person may be completely normal to another (as some of the images were...so I guess they aren't abstract in the true meaning) and then I started wondering if it meant abstact macro (of course I would assume it would say macro and not have it just "understood"). I probably should have just sat out the challenge but I really liked my idea and will take the beatings as they come.

I make it more clear why I did it this way.

I have studied all forms of art throughout my life, and it has been a huge part of my life. I have two art degrees, and it was a test on my part to see if I could see what the image was saying to me, re the emotion I could see, before I looked at the title.

I should have added I did look at the title, but not until I had an opinion on the emotion I felt with the image, that I was looking at.

Does that make sense to you, as I have love art all my life and visited galleries, whenever I could, especially abstract art where one can often, see, feel and almost touch the emotion that the artist was sharing with us.

I know this is different as we are looking at photography, but I still wanted to do it my way, to see if I could see what the photographer was trying to share with us, in his or her image.

I hope that makes it a little more clearer for you, and yes it is only my point of view.

I think there are a lot of entries that people forgot to add the "abstract" to their emotions.

Looks like a 5.8 might win this one. LOL

I'm kind of frustrated by this challenge. A good majority of the entries aren't even the slightest bit abstract, and it's making it really hard to vote. I put so much thought and work into coming up with a true abstract and I have a feeling that non-abstract but pretty to look at photos are going to end up winning.
09/29/2008 09:34:40 AM · #63
yes, lots of these are not abstract. If I can clearly make out what it is, then to me its not abstract. It will be a tough one to vote on.

It doesn't matter how well a photo fits the challenge; if it resembles the popular style here on dpc, you could ribbon in any challenge with a picture of a droplet of water, some snazzy lighting or reflective glass. It's like moths to flames, 'ooh look it's shiny, 10!' One of the completely non-abstract pictures will win, because despite the challenge, abstract is not popular on dpc.

Aaaaanyhoo, my score is under 5 and I'm pretty disappointed, I really liked the shot.

I hear you. I felt mine was pretty cool and abstract. But I guess it is too abstract and not shiny enough. Oh well, next time I will take a longer break or not even bother again.

I am not sure if I agree with you on that. I bet an abstract photo will win this one. I highly doubt voters are going to vote high on something that they clearly make out.
I have submitted excellent borderline photos and they have all consistenly done bad due that they are borderline. I feel if they dont meet the challenge you get penalized highly on this site.

I didnt enter this one as Im not good at abstract, never have been, probably never will be.
I am trying to vote on them all though so have wikipediad "abstract art" in an effort to get where you are all coming from. I hope I do justice to your ideas and dont offend anyone :D

This is certainly better than last night (5.1 at 16 votes). I hope the trend continues. I tried hard to follow the theme of the challenge, and it wasn't easy. But I value the challenges that make us think and try new things.

I'm not good at the typical abstract but if the majority of the photo has that feeling, and maybe a part of it is recognizable then to me, it's still ok. It is totally a crap shoot. I think many just read the title and not the description. Maybe it should have said "Abstract that makes us feel Emotion." Take an abstract photo.. oh and by the way, make it conjure up an emotion in the viewer. LOL

I have to agree about the popular style... I even tried to emulate it to see if it would make a higher score. Boy was I wrong. ROFL

That often seems to be the case. To me it is carelessness, and akin to not ensuring that your date and time are correct on your camera. Personally I don't understand why someone would not read the details of the challenge.

That said, I'll record my score, because it may be at its high point.

urgggggggggggg voted in this challenge. Whilst there are some outstanding shots in there, in my personal opinion there are only a handful of abstract shots, the rest seem to be a freestudy. Mind you what do I know.

5.4x

I put way too much time and energy into figuring out what to enter and then tweaking it. Even if it was 7.9 =]
