I think they should have invested in one of these...
If I was in their place I'd have just used my radio and called the cops directly (she says her husband is a firefighter). Haven't called 911 in a long time. It's great having a radio to talk on.

Yeesh. I listened to the 9-1-1 call and did some searching to find more about the story. What a world.
It was interesting to read the comments from people at the end of the Dallas Morning News story, with some people suggesting that it was brutal that the intruder wound up dead. My feeling is that if you're going to break into someone's home and terrorize them, you should do so with the expectation that you personally may wind up in the morgue out of the deal, and I certainly wouldn't expect a whole lot of pity to be upon you. |

Here in Texas we are legally allowed to use deadly force to protect our lives and our property. This includes the legal right for any citizen to carry a concealed handgun in our automobiles so that we can protect our lives and property.
Gotta love Texas.

I'm sorry that the couple have to live with the aftermath of this. Especially when you hear on the tape that they didn't want him to die (even though he asked them to kill him).
However, that said I applaud them for protecting themselves when he started attacking them. I too live in a state where you are allowed to use deadly force to protect your home/belongings and hope that if someone hurts my family that I would be willing and able to fight back.
Thank you Alan, I was hoping there was more information out there. |

Wow! That is very disturbing (and I'm only a few minutes into it!)
ETA: Please keep us updated on the story.

I was chatting with a guy at a conference one time and it turned out he was a subject of a news story in my town.
A teen broke into his house through a basement window. The guy heard it and got up to see what the noise was while his wife & children stayed upstairs in their rooms. He found the teen hiding in the darkened laundry room and punched the teen in the face, then called the police.
I don't know the end of the story, other than nothing happened to the teen, but the guy got in a lot of heat over punching the kid.
In Canada, if someone breaks into your house, you're supposed to call the police, and let the intruder(s) take or do whatever they want. It's true! I'm not kidding!

In most parts of the US that's what they want you to do. In my state of NC, you're supposed to retreat, if possible, in the face of a threat. My house is very small so my back is to the wall and I can't back up a single step. :) So there won't be any background audio of a living intruder on my 911 call.
In your case slippy I think posting this image,
20x30 on the front door would deter most intruders.

In MD the only way you can kill an intruder is if you feel like your life is being threatened. So I guess me laying in bed and an intruder being in my house isn't going to automatically make me feel like my life is in danger...those intruders shouldn't have rights. |

I would think that if some one breaks into your house while you are there you would be justified in assuming your life being in danger. I guess I could ask the guy to sit down and have some coffee so he can explain to me what his intentions are for being in my house illegally. Please spare me this bullshit. Thank goodness that Missouri passed the Castle law defense where you can defend your house and car without fear of prosecution. I can say one thing, if someone breaks in my house and I'm home there isn't going to be a whole lot of questioning going on, maybe what do you want on your tombstone, and I'm not talking about pizza. |
