Seriously...what would it cost to up the challenge submission resolution to 1000 px (or even 800 px) on the smallest side? I don't even vote anymore, AND I MISS IT, because the images are SOOOOOOOOOOOO SMALLLLLLLLLLLLLL on my primary computer screen. How much extra would it cost each member for adding space and bandwidth to cover larger submissions? Other than another meaningless poll, what can WE do to make it happen? Hell, even Fotofight requires larger submissions. I though this was the site that was paving the way for digital photography. |

I would pay extra for a membership that included extra weekly challenges that allowed larger sized images. and it would be even better if the extra challenges included a 'regular' mix of Minimal, Basic, Advanced and Expert Editing....just to keep us on our toes.

I believe we have a lower resolution for submission so 56k users can also use the site since it takes a long time to view larger images on a 56k connection |

Well, Eric, perhaps you need to down-grade your computer. ;-Þ ;-Þ

Yes and I remember that poll to see what the percentage was for low connections.
I think it is time to redo it!

I thought it was more about what is the standard resolution on standard screens. I seem to recall that it has more to do with what is viewable in the main browser area for most users... It's possible this has increased in recent times, but I believe that you will still see a very substantial number of users that have 1024x768 monitors... I believe that the new standard is widescreen 1268x900... is that correct? I would guess that we are still a good couple of years off of seeing that become as widespread as 1024x768 amongst actual users though... Give it a year or two... Most people keep their computers for around 5 years.
I'm hoping to upgrade next summer myself... That would be 6 years... but I'm still in "starving student" mode...
In the meantime eric, I believe that some browsers allow you to resize simply by holding down a key and using the mouse scroll wheel. Firefox and Opera if memory serves.
Firefox is pretty good.

I believe we also had a poll on monitor size about a year ago.
This would be nice if it can be done. I think more people would vote.
Is there a way for DPC to allow us to download a challenge and vote on it OFFLINE. Then upload our votes before the voting period is done?
They could have two different downloads, one for 56k and one for high speed. This would help in letting us have larger images, you could upload or download while away from home or sleeping.
Hum... I wonder if the technology is available to allow this type of voting.

In response to the bold part -- since when? I just looked and it says

Other things Langdon possibly has to consider --
* DPC is international and as such we have users that have to pay by download, etc.
* If you increase to 1000 pixels, you would really need to up the allowable file size as well. This is going to increase bandwidth usage and all that other tech stuff ya'll talk about.
* Image theft becomes more tempting

Looking at the polls, at least those that voted want higher res allowances. Even if membership went up a few dollars annually, I can't imagine that you'd get many complaints. The extra fee should more than cover bandwidth and storage costs. karmat, I must have been thinking of eyefetch rather than fotofight. But fotofight even gives you 33% more allowance on the file size for every challenge. As far as image "theft" goes, I stand by the position that the best way to keep your image safe and sound is to keep it off the internet. I can't see anyone making their millions from a photo that they stole from me. I know that is a touchy subject, but I think that we make a much bigger deal of it than it really is. It just seems that Langdon has asked us several times if we wanted more resolution and files size allowances, and we have answered yes by majority each time. Still, we get only partial change. I fell in love with this site the instant I found it, and I still visit it multiple times each day. However, I can't continue to pay for something that I feel is falling short in progression. Sure, our portfolio space was upgraded, but we didn't even ask for that. We have asked for bigger pictures all the time, and it has only been half addressed. I prefer looking through and voting on the open challenges, as those tend to draw a wider variety of entrants. The images are just too small for me to fairly cast a vote from my machine. I'd like to see that remedied...please. |
