Hi Folks,

I have the opportunity to buy a faulty Canon Speedlite 580 EX flash for approx £40. As these retail for about £260+ i reckon it would be worth buying and then sendong off to canon for repiar and i would still be saving a load of money.

Do you think this is a good idea?

It all depends on how faulty it is. Without knowing how much the repair is likely to cost, one can't really say with any degree of certainty.

A repair of any type will cost no more than £100 i have been quoted.

I had my first 580 fixed by Canon for $148 (American $$). They replaced the mainboard inside. I can't remember exactly, but I want to say that it was a "flat rate" for any fix to that flash.

By the time you've finished paying for fixing this unit, you might well have dropped more than £200.00 plus mailing. You want to pay that for a used flash unit? Why not put the money to a new 430EX instead which will be under warranty. For off camera work, buy a used Nikon flash (not usable on your Canon hot shoe).
