Hi all!
I love doing food photography (as you can see) and I have done the menu photos for one restaurant before. When I did that restaurant, however, I was very bad at negociating, and wasn't really sure what would be fair. As such, I think I probably gave the owner WAY to much usage rights for what I charged her. So I'm thinking of revising my food package before going to other restaurants, and I'm looking for input. Would giving them the right to use the pictures in the restaurant (i.e. menu images, posters, take out menus and brochures) when they hire me and then charging extra usage rights if they wanted to use the image in advertising in magazines/newspapers be acceptable, or is that not how it usually works?
Thanks for you guys' advice!

Wow, I'm a food photo fan myself - awesome portfolio! Mmm, I'm salivating already. =)
I know in the stock world photos are licensed for specific runs (magazine with 10k circulation). Perhaps you could offer two levels of licensing: basic rights (in-restaurant only) and extended rights (external advertising) - obviously at different price levels. |

I would just shoot them in exchange for free food. But that's just me. ;-)
I like smurfguy's suggestion - seems reasonable and is probably the standard. I'd be curious how you are marketing your services - do you advertise for this service or just solicit directly? |

Thanks, smurfguy, that's a great idea! I feel dumb for not thinking of it! XD. Glad you like the photos.
Art Roflmao, I live in a very small town so I know several restaurant owners in the area. So at the moment I'm just planning on bringing up the subject next time I eat out and seeing who's interested. "Oh, you have a new menu item? Have you ever thought about..." That sort of thing. I then plan on adding those images in my portfolio and soliciting directly to places where I don't know the owners. "I recently did the menu for such-and-such *show portfolio*, would you be interested in...".

I think that's an excellent plan. |

You may also want to ask if they would like you to shoot the building for the menu, and for ads. It could be a different deal, or in the package. Maybe just another angle to possibly make a few $.

Thanks for the replies, guys! I like the idea of shooting the building too, I will certainly think about trying that (my architectural photos could use some work first :D).
