Could be a Mac, I suppose, but somehow I don't think we're up for the shock of change.

This here PC from which this very message comes, is five years and a bit old. It gets a little tired at times.

The new and fabulous FlexScanS2231W LCD monitor we just plugged in deserves a least a graphic card that supports the wide screen format.

On being ordered to disembowel the poor machine and photograph the innards to establish whether there is a slot for the proposed new card, I say: "Why don't we just get a new computer?"

Several reasons are given, i.e. we-can't-afford-it plus we-can't-afford-it's friends and relations. Having taken a deep breath and ignored all those, we can talk turkey. After talking turkey for a while we feel a bit silly so we switch back to English.

'Shop around'

'Why don't we just get one from Dell'

'Maybe there's a better one that isn't from Dell'

So - what am I looking for?

I thought a dual core processor would be about all I need to specify. I'm thinking along the lines of state-of-the-art minus 6 to 12 months or whatever is needed to take it far enough off the heat for me to afford it. It's not a lot of use talking price-by-number as everything here is probably US price x10 or roundabout...

We're all right for screen, there's a 500 GB WD external disc so hard disc capacity is not so crucial (unless you tell me it is). CS2 & LR, both due for a boost, I guess.

RAM, processor, hard disc capacity (guess there should be something for scratch discs) graphic card...

Anyone like to comment along the lines of must have // ought to have // would like to have // o boy imagine if I could have... ?

Apologies for dumb questions, but five years on and I've just forgotten (O, bliss) about this stuff. Dpc frowns on obscenity in the forums, but if you feel the need you can PM me and I won't take it personally.

I shall now go shop around the mighty net, where the snow rapidly gets to blizzard proportions - thought I'd post this first. Thanks.
