I looked at the furry bear shots and tried to replicate his results. My conclusion is that he had the in-camera noise reduction set to "Normal" (the default), when "Low" would have been a better choice for that subject and ISO. The other cameras probably have more appropriate defaults. Anyway, unless you shoot in caves regularly, there are better criteria to choose a camera by now than high ISO noise. All the new models are good.
I think the three things the D300 has that the D90 is lacking that I've actually found to be important are the better quality build, 51 point AF and the 14-bit RAW. The AF allows me to easily get shots of things that I had to work for with my D70 (birds in flight and careening toddlers). The 14-bit RAW produces shots with a lot more shadow detail than is possible with 12 bit. |
Ann, I'm just curious.
-How big are the files when you use the 14 bit RAW?
-Also, what is the difference between the three different RAW compressions and which one do you generally use?
